Students showcase their Mariachi skills

Mariachi is a traditional Mexican style of music showcased around the world. At IU, 20 students are preparing to perform a free Mariachi de la Flor End of Term Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center Grand Hall. They are part of the Mariachi Performance and Culture class in the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology. By preparing for the concert, the students have gained knowledge of Latin American culture through mariachi music. Mariachi is most closely associated with the Jalisco region in Mexico, but the term also can refer to the musician and the ensemble that plays it.

A family reunion worth attending

"Meet the Fockers," the sequel to 2000's hit comedy "Meet the Parents," picks up where the first film left off. In preparation for their upcoming wedding, Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) and Pam Byrnes (Teri Polo) plan for their parents to meet for the first time. So begins a visit where uptight Jack and Dina Byrnes (Robert De Niro and Blythe Danner) meet the wacky Bernie and Roz Focker (Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand). Unsurprisingly, chaos ensues.

I got ripped off by a 'Star Wars' nerd

This past Saturday a few friends and I hit up the Star Wars Celebration III at the Indiana Convention Center in Indy. Well, sort of ... We arrived Saturday afternoon around 3 -- this way we'd be there in time for the panel featuring Warwick "Willow" Davis.

Albuquerque prepares for 300th birthday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A yearlong celebration featuring art from Spain, dance from Mexico, Indian culture and a reenactment of a cattle drive will take place Albuquerque, N.M., as the city marks its 300th birthday. "There is something for everybody coming up over the next year or so," Mayor Martin Chavez told residents at a news conference where he was flanked by mariachis and costumed volunteers. "You are going to be so proud to be an Albuquerquean."

Missing student found overseas

IU junior Lisa Wright, reported missing by her family last week, has been found, according to a spokeswoman for London's Metropolitan Police Department. Matthew Steward, Wright's uncle, said the family received a call from London Police Monday.

Phi Kappa Tau recognized as chapter

Two years of hard work for the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity culminated April 9 with the official installation of its charter, which recognizes it as a chapter of the national fraternity. Forty-two newly initiated members were presented with their charter in the State Room of the Indiana Memorial Union.

Vote for Pedro sets agenda

On April 15 Vote for Pedro began its yearlong tenure planning to implement the platform that was the focus of their campaign. YEAR OF EINSTEIN

Exactly 100 years ago, 26-year-old physicist and mathematician Albert Einstein published three papers that changed scientists' perspectives forever. The year 2005 also marks 50th anniversary of the death of the German genius on April 18, 1955.
