Students' style, musical tastes to be considered art

·

Do you realize that every time you glide your finger on your iPod Click Wheel to find that perfect song, that every time you dance and that every time you laugh at a comedic performance, you are enjoying the arts? As one of the spring 2006 arts editors for the Indiana Daily Student, I fear that too many readers (yes, you) pair the arts and, in turn, the arts page of the IDS, only with high-culture opera and theater productions that appeal little to the college demographic, especially at IU. Moreover, I fear that readers have a tendency to skip over this page, maybe just glancing at the photos or skimming through the upcoming events.

Charlize quite 'Flux'able

·

"Aeon Flux" was never, by any stretch of the imagination, popular, but it did garner a sort of cult following of fans who enjoyed the show's overt sexuality, raging violence and baffling abundance of codpieces. That's why it is so surprising that this bizarre show, with its scantily clad heroine, would be turned into a major motion picture, almost 15 years after it first appeared and disappeared into relative obscurity on MTV's short lived animation showcase, "Liquid Television."

Is there a middle road?

·

Bisexuality. It's an ambiguous label. Its meaning is highly debated among critics in both straight and gay communities. Some have called bisexuality a transition phase between being straight and gay. Others say it is simply an indication of a person's sexual confusion. And then there is the phrase coined by some members of the homosexual population: "You are either gay, straight or lying."

Mars orbit closest to Earth since 2003

·

Beginning last weekend and continuing through the rest of the week, Mars and Earth are aligned with the sun and the two planets are separated by a mere 43 million miles -- the closest they've been since August 2003 when they were 35 million miles apart. Mars is Earth's closest neighbor, even though a gap of more than 140 million miles usuallly separates the two planets' oval-shaped orbits within the solar system.

Grant to further breast cancer research at IU

·

Breast cancer in females has a higher death rate than lung cancer, but researchers at IU are working to change that. With the help of outside funding, a post-doctoral fellow at the IU School of Medicine is currently in the process of studying a novel set of cancer drugs that would target the area of primary growth of the breast cancer tumor within the human bone.

Not so sweet revenge For pranksters in search of sweet revenge, dumping sugar in a person's gas tank might be the traditional choice but rarely does this prank live up to its reputation, according to the folks at www.snopes.com, a Web site dedicated to urban legends. In theory, the sugar is supposed to dissolve into the gasoline and travel along fuel lines to the engine. The heat from the engine is then supposed to melt the sugar into a dense sludge, which penetrates the engine, causing it to seize. The legend continues that the sludge then hardens into a rigid consistency, making it impossible to remove from the engine cavity.

Pre-packaged food high in sodium, 'bad' fats

·

Sophomore Charles Lee's dinner on a recent weeknight consisted of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn and apple cobbler for dessert. Preparation only took minutes -- in fact, all he needed to do was set the timer for his microwave oven. "It's quick and easy," Lee said, as he watched the tray swivel. "I usually buy several microwave dinners whenever I do groceries."

It's a lot harder than you think

·

Besides abstinence and long-term mutually monogamous relationships with uninfected partners, latex condoms are the most effective method for reducing the risk of infection from sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancy and HIV/AIDS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Regardless of whether or not students are using condoms each time they engage in sexual contact, the question still remains: Are students using condoms correctly?

·

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- With most of their goals accomplished, the Indianapolis Colts can now turn their attention to history. But don't expect them to look too far ahead. Peyton Manning threw two touchdown passes to Marvin Harrison, Mike Vanderjagt kicked four field goals and the Colts remained unbeaten with a 26-18 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

'Turn around' is fair play

·

POINT -- Hoo-Hoo-Hoo-Who? What do Penn State, Ohio State and a handful of Jews with dreidels have in common? Come late December, they will all be playing games. As for the 12th straight holiday season, the Hoosiers will be watching the games on television. And you know what? Hoosier fans' anger is justified. With a 4-1 record at the beginning of the season, the Hoosiers were rolling down the river of bowl expectations. They steamed into Big Ten play only to be pimp-slapped Ike Turner-style for the remainder of their season schedule.

IU facing the 'winter of dissatisfaction'

·

While last offseason was a winter of transition for the IU football team, coach Terry Hoeppner has labeled this offseason a "winter of dissatisfaction." "For anyone who needs a change, this is a winter of dissatisfaction," Hoeppner said. "We came out with the goal to 'Play 12' this season and we were unable to do so. Maybe next year our goal will be to 'Play 13.'"

The duals were the first for the No. 16 Hoosiers. IU coach Duane Goldman was happy with his team's effort, which came off of a bye week.

RCA Dome kind to IU as women also win

·

In their fifth straight game away from Assembly Hall, three seniors led the way for the Hoosiers on Saturday. The three players combined for 48 points, nearly enough to top Boston University's team total of 54. Four other Hoosiers made up the rest of the team's 14 points as IU defeated Boston 62-54 Saturday at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.
