A big crown to fill

The race for the crown has begun. The 15 contestants of this year's Miss Indiana University Pageant have been involved in a whirlwind of preparations in hopes of becoming the next Miss IUB. The pageant, to be held at 4 p.m. Sunday in Alumni Hall of the Indiana Memorial Union, will be the second Miss IUB competition since it made a comeback in 2006 after a 37-year absence. This year's contestant group ranges in experience from state-level pageants to no previous experience at all, said the pageant's executive director, Lindsay Shipps Etienne. "I feel so strong about this year's pool of contestants," she said. "It's so refreshing to see people who have never dealt with pageants coming together with those who have and seeing the work come together." Aside from competing for $6,000 in scholarships from the IU Foundation, the winner will go on to compete against 26 other local-level winners in the Miss Indiana Pageant in June. The contestants for Miss IUB will be judged on formal interviews and their talent, evening gowns, swimsuits and onstage interviews.

Winter weather leads to increased bus usage

Last Wednesday, Boston was in a panic when several "suspicious packages" were found attached to structures throughout the city. They were initially assumed to be bombs, and several were destroyed. However, it was soon revealed that they were part of a guerilla marketing campaign for "Aqua Teen Hunger Force," a show that airs late at night on Cartoon Network.

McDonald's in Read to leave campus next year

Grammy winner Ralph Stanley comes to BCT

At 8 p.m. today, bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys will perform at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. Stanley, 79, has been performing since 1946, according to a news release from the theater.

2 parties emerge for this month's IUSA election

The IU Student Association announced its election candidates Thursday, and the two running parties are the Hoosier party and the High 5 party. The IUSA elections committee held a mandatory all-candidates meeting Thursday night to discuss election procedures and rules, but the High 5 party failed to show up or contact the IUSA elections commissioner.

Hoosiers' perfect record in jeopardy this weekend

For the first time since 2002, the IU women's tennis team is 8-0. But when the Hoosiers travel to Tobacco Road to play Duke on Saturday and North Carolina on Sunday, their spotless record could receive its first blemish. When looking at the latest team rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, it doesn't take long to find either of IU's upcoming opponents. North Carolina holds the No. 7 slot and Duke is just outside the top 10 at No. 11.

No. 22 grapplers hope to bounce back after 2 tough dual meets

It has been a rough two weeks for the No. 22 IU wrestling team. After losing their first dual meet of the season against Illinois on Jan. 21, the Hoosiers went on to lose their next three meets, the most recent loss coming against North Carolina State last weekend.

IU squads hit road for 1st time

IU looks to defend Big Ten title

Last year, IU junior swimmer Ben Hesen helped lead the men's swimming and diving team to its first Big Ten title in 21 years. While he believes that experience will help the team at this year's conference tournament, he said he expects that the upperclassmen will find this meet similar to last year's.
