Obama calls for action on economy

ELKHART, Ind. – Making his case in the most dire terms, President Barack Obama said that if Congress does not quickly pass an economic stimulus package, the nation will slip into a crisis so deep that "we may be unable to reverse" it.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Tom Crean has gotten his share of applause during pre-game introductions this season. But Saturday’s ovation wasn’t from a Hoosier crowd in Assembly Hall; it was coming from the Michigan State fans.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – A team as young as IU can be expected to lose its poise at times throughout the season. But on Saturday it was one of the more experienced Hoosiers who couldn’t control his temper.

Coming into the conference season, freshman forward Tom Pritchard was a driving force. His scoring – highest among Big Ten freshmen – combined with an impressive if small array of post moves almost assured him the pole position for conference freshman of the year.

IU’s leading scorer Devan Dumes has been suspended indefinitely by IU coach Tom Crean for his actions during the Hoosiers’ loss at Michigan State on Saturday.

Optometry students travel to Mexico

Thirty Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity students left for Mexico on Saturday and will return to Bloomington on Feb. 14. Once in Mexico, the group will work at the clinic for about seven or eight hours a day from Sunday through Thursday and see about 500 patients each day.

Classes offer short-term travel abroad opportunities

Short-term travel courses at IU are offering students a whole new way to experience the world. As an alternative to study abroad, several schools at IU now offer courses that take students overseas for a shorter period of time. The courses are led by IU faculty and staff but still allow students to have an international experience.

‘Stop Kiss’ acting could be refined

Like any work by playwright Diana Son, “Stop Kiss” is punchy, passionate and honest. It is unfortunate, then, that IU’s production, now in performances at the Lee Norvelle Theater and Drama Center, fails to achieve the same straightforwardness.

1st Walk of the year features a wide range of exhibits

Balloons marked the entrance of the eight participating galleries for the first Gallery Walk of the year on Feb. 6. While members of the community ate finger foods provided by the galleries, they viewed new exhibits chosen months in advance.

Freshmen cousins make art debut with graffiti paintings

With graffiti-inspired paintings and a love of art, IU freshmen Rafael Cronin and Grant Myers arrived in Bloomington’s art scene with the opening of their first collaborative exhibit. The show, titled “Urban Scrawls,” premiered at the Bellevue Gallery during the Gallery Walk on Feb. 6 and will remain on display until March 28.
