It is hoping the ultimate reward will be a trip to the Final Four in the heart of Big Ten country -- Indianapolis.

Flag football resumes after weather delays

·

While the majority of football fans around the country were tuning in to the Colts-Vikings Monday Night Football matchup, senior Todd Bunton and the rest of Da Bears were getting ready for their quarterfinal game of the intramural flag football playoffs. The success of Da Bears is among the many interesting storylines surrounding the flag football tournament.

Power play fires Hoosiers to victories

·

The IU ice hockey team played host to a two-game inter-conference series last weekend at Frank Southern Ice Arena, welcoming Ferris State University to town. A notoriously dirty and physical team, the Bulldogs came into the Frank looking to impose their will on the Hoosiers with their size advantage. After thrashing Illinois by a total of 14-2 in Bloomington last weekend, the top priority around the IU locker room was maintaining the team's perfect record at home.

Key players attract managers

·

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. -- Pedro Martinez, Sammy Sosa and Randy Johnson figured to attract plenty of attention once all 30 general managers got together Monday and set up shop for their annual meetings. Many of the general managers had already arrived at the ritzy oceanfront hotel by the time some other prominent guests -- members of the heavy metal band Metallica -- checked out. Quickly, the baseball folks got down to business.

Hoosiers get by AIS 75-67

·

Before the season opener Nov. 19 at No. 8 Baylor University, the IU women's basketball team got a preseason test against the Australian Institute of Sport -- and it was tested. IU passed the test, behind some timely shooting and defensive stops to win 75-67. Throughout much of the second half, AIS held on to the lead, building it to as high as 61-54 with seven minutes remaining.

on the SIDELINES

·

ATLANTA - Retief Goosen defied the odds at every turn Sunday in the Tour Championship. No one makes birdie on the 481-yard 16th hole, especially not from the rough. Goosen smoked a 5-iron from 195 yards that dropped in front of the flag and stopped 3 feet away.

Women's team swims to pair of wins, loss to N'Western

·

The No. 21 IU women's swimming and diving team faced tough competition over the weekend as they took on Big Ten rival Northwestern Friday, and then welcomed the University of Kentucky and Southwest Missouri State University Saturday afternoon.

Dueling for victories

·

It was a long, strenuous weekend for the IU men's swimming and diving team. After a sweep at the hands of Texas the weekend prior, the Hoosiers knew the next couple of meets could help separate them from the pack. The No. 13 ranked Hoosiers first met the No. 14 ranked Northwestern Wildcats Friday in the team's first dual meet against a conference opponent. Both teams fought a hard battle and the meet proved as close as the two teams' rankings would suggest.

Late collapse ends bowl dreams

·

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Late in the third quarter with the Hoosiers driving downfield, senior quarterback Matt LoVecchio ran for a first down, putting IU in the red zone and in position to increase its lead. Instead of getting up, LoVecchio laid dazed and confused on the turf, the same emotions the team felt after letting another fourth quarter lead and any hopes of a bowl bid slip away in a 26-22 loss to Illinois Saturday afternoon.

Not far from the tree

·

Like father, like son. For many young boys, there is the inherent dream to be like their fathers, if only for a short while. The picture is common and crystal clear: A young boy suits up in his father's attire and pictures himself following in his footsteps. Sophomore lineman Justin Frye and senior long snapper Kyle Warriner's childhood aspirations took a similar path; however, their fathers' footsteps were formed by pairs of football cleats.
