Jeff Sagarin: the human sports rating system

·

Jeff Sagarin is unconventional. While most mathematicians use C++ and Microsoft Excel to work with algorithms, the Bloomington resident still uses Fortran, an MS-DOS based computer program he first learned in the fall of 1966 as an undergraduate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. But don't let the ancient computer program fool you -- what Sagarin creates within it is on the cutting edge of math in the sports world. "Real old guys like me -- we like Fortran and we're not going to change," said Sagarin, whose love for sports statistics started when he was a kid growing up in New York.

Stumbling Hoosiers look to get back on track in Big Ten

·

Coming off a tough road loss at Michigan State last weekend, the IU women's basketball team will wrap up its two-game road trip tonight against a Wisconsin team that has had its own share of struggles in its Big Ten schedule. The Hoosiers led much of the game Sunday in East Lansing, clinging to a lead as late as 6:10 left in the second half. But IU had difficulty dealing with a tenacious Michigan State press that limited the Hoosiers to just one field goal over a span of seven minutes as the Hoosiers succumbed 65-59. IU coach Sharon Versyp is looking for her team to focus more in the closing moments.

IU holds off scrappy Wildcats

·

It was a lineup change that made IU look a little more like its usual self in last night's 72-63 win over Northwestern at Assembly Hall Wednesday night. The No. 21 Hoosiers (13-5, 5-3 Big Ten) got a total of 20 points from both of their leading scorers -- senior forward Marco Killingsworth and sophomore guard Robert Vaden -- but were still able to win, shooting the familiar numbers of 51 percent from the field and 39 percent from 3-point range. After two lackluster performances on the road last week, IU coach Mike Davis made the decision to rework his starting rotation. "We really didn't shake it up," Davis said. "We just played the guys that were going to give us a chance to win the basketball game."

Hoosiers squander lead once again

·

For the second straight weekend, the IU hockey team was unable to hold on to a third period lead, as it blew a 5-3 advantage in the second game of its weekend set. The Hoosiers settled for a tie after winning 5-2 Friday night against the defending Division II American Collegiate Hockey Association National Champions Michigan State Spartans in Bloomington.

February Madness for amateur athletes

·

For many IU students, high school marks the end of serious, organized athletic competition. Unless one possesses the athletic ability of James Hardy or the heart of Errek Suhr, most likely, their playing days as an athlete are minimal. However, through the IU's division of Recreational Sports, students are provided the opportunity to further their glory days as a competitor and experience the emotion and adrenaline rush of "March Madness."

Hoosiers look to rebound from 2 consecutive losses

·

IU has struggled on the boards all season long, but the biggest rebound of the season won't come from a box out. The season's most crucial rebound could come tonight against Northwestern (10-8, 3-4 Big Ten) in Assembly Hall, where the No. 21 Hoosiers will try to bounce back from two straight road losses.

Hoosiers split weekend doubleheader, move to 4-1

·

The IU women's tennis team split its doubleheader Sunday, losing its first match of the season to No. 14 Duke 6-1 before rebounding against Ball State 7-0. The No. 32 Hoosiers faced a tough opponent in the Blue Devils, who boast two singles players ranked in the top 30 nationally. Despite the loss, the team members said they felt positive about their performance. "Even though we lost to Duke, we had a lot of close matches," IU's No. 3 singles player Brianna Williams said. "Everybody was in every match and had a chance to win."

Midwest League OKs sale

·

MARION, Ill. -- Minor-league baseball's Midwest League agreed Monday to the sale of one of its Indiana teams to a group headed by a prominent Illinois attorney but took no action on the group's possible push to move the club to southern Illinois. The Midwest League's board of directors last month tabled the possible sale of the South Bend Silver Hawks to John Simmons' Chautauqua Heights LLC, saying it needed more details from Simmons and offering him a chance to resubmit his proposal for the Class A team.

Team maintains undefeated record with sweep

·

The No. 60 IU men's tennis team moved to 4-0 on the season with its second consecutive doubleheader sweep. The Hoosiers won the first ever matchup against fellow in-state school IU-Purdue University Fort Wayne 7-0, and improved to 4-0 all-time against Toledo after Saturday's 6-1 win. "We have had two weekends with two matches, and I feel like it has gotten us into better tennis shape," IU coach Ken Hydinger said. "We have a number of guys that are moving up in the singles lineup from a year ago, and with these matches, I feel like they are becoming more comfortable in those positions."

7 of 11

·

The Badgers have spent more time atop the Big Ten than anyone, but evened the field this weekend when they lost in Michigan. Normally Wisconsin would be considered unbeatable at home, but North Dakota State gave everyone hope when it upset the Badgers in the Kohl Center. Kammron "Chris Rock" Taylor has joined Alando Tucker to provide an ample one-two punch on offense, but the attack has been streaky all season.
