RecSports gears up for intramural basketball season

·

It's that time of year again. The time when thousands of students go head-to-head on the basketball court in the Assembly Hall spotlight to have their biggest fans cheer them on. It's not quite March Madness, and the players aren't Kelvin Sampson's crew, but much of the excitement is still there and, for some, there's still a lot on the line. It's intramural basketball season.

Hoosiers hold on to knock off Hawkeyes

·

Before Jan. 2, IU fans presumably had little idea how well their Hoosiers -- a team with a new coach, two junior college transfers, a previously injured star and a menagerie of freshmen -- would perform in the Big Ten. Since their 74-67 loss to Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio, the Hoosiers (13-4, 4-1 Big Ten) have answered that question with four straight convincing wins -- the latest coming against Iowa, 71-64, Tuesday night.

WEST LAFAYETTE -- In its first shot against its former coach, the IU women's basketball team came up on the short end. Hoosiers head home for Hawkeyes

·

The IU men's basketball team will return home Tuesday night to face the Iowa Hawkeyes after a successful weekend trip to State College, Pa. The Hoosiers defeated Penn State 84-74 behind a career-high 25 points and 12 boards from senior guard Rod Wilmont. The Hoosiers improved to 12-4 overall and 3-1 in Big Ten play with the victory. "Rod threw up a couple of vomit shots the other day," coach Kelvin Sampson said during a press conference Monday. "I doubt we had anybody else on this team that would even think about shooting some of his shots, but what are you going to say to Rod? I thought he did a good job defending (Penn State forward Geary) Claxton and their half-court sets. He had 12 rebounds and was busting his tail."

Student-led chant draws criticism

·

As Georgette Billings sat in Section J of Assembly Hall on Wednesday night, it wasn't the play on the court that was displeasing her. After all, the Hoosiers she has been devoted to since 1942 were in the middle of demolishing in-state rival Purdue 85-58. Instead, it was what the 88-year-old later found out the IU students were chanting -- a thundering chorus of "stand up, old people" -- that caused her to call the Indiana Daily Student offices Thursday morning and politely lodge a complaint. "I just thought it was a little bit rude," said Billings, who said she's owned season tickets to IU football and basketball games for 38 years. "I stand, I cheer. I'm not mad about it at all -- I guess it just sort of hit me in the wrong way this morning." Billings' comments were just part of the reaction to a series of student chants at Assembly Hall on Wednesday night. IU Athletics Director Rick Greenspan was among those who reacted to the chants immediately after the game, saying he hoped to convey a message to students that the department appreciated their support but hoped they would cheer with "class" in the future.
