Coaches bring new style to IU

Patrolling the 50-yard line at Memorial Stadium Saturday, coach Gerry DiNardo eyed his football team as it participated in pre-practice stretches. Piercing through the 40-degree wind blowing toward the north end of the stadium was the scratchy, Boston accent of defensive line coach Joe Cullen.

Coach hurt in wreck

Women's basketball coach Kathi Bennett remained in stable condition at Bloomington Hospital Sunday night after breaking the second vertebra in her neck in a two-car accident Friday morning in Bloomington.

Heading to lay-offs on a good note

The IU men's track and field team was victorious this weekend. The Hoosiers defeated Big Ten foes Ohio State and Penn State at home Saturday. IU is 3-0 heading into a two-week lay-off. The meet had good performances including three more NCAA provisional marks.

Benson's campaign comes to an end

For former IU basketball star Kent Benson, swishing a jump shot was far easier than being away from his family. Benson put an end to his pursuit of Indiana's Secretary of State office last week, saying he wants to spend more time with his family.

Coach Mike Davis is happy he had to endure just a 45-minute bus ride for the Big Ten Tournament. Senior Dane Fife and Tom Coverdale hope for high Hoosier fan turnout, and Jared Jeffries' family won't have to fly, something the sophomore fears. For IU, there are plenty of positives regarding the Big Ten Tournament moving to Indianapolis for the first time in its five-year history.

Mouse pads and Heismans

On the road to the Heisman Trophy, Oregon's Joey Harrington has a $250,000 10-story high billboard in Times Square. Antwaan Randle El has mouse pads. Hey, they're neat mouse pads. Colorful and bright, they boast IU's quarterback-turned-receiver as a "Heisman Trophy Frontrunner." So does the 2001 IU football media guide, front and center. In fact, Randle El's figure, some red flowers and the Sample Gates cover the cover. Six other Hoosiers got to share the back cover.

Hoosiers put win in the past

Antwaan Randle El plays a lot of roles on the football team. He's the quarterback, the team's second-leading rusher, the punt returner and sometimes a punter. Right up there with his football duties are his off-the-field tasks. One of those is being a captain, which requires keeping his teammates level-headed.

Do the seats proud

Ever wonder what the 20,000 seats in Memorial Stadium that aren't filled do on Saturdays? The players know how bad it sucks to have a crowd that could be out-numbered by a state-wide meeting of the Athletes Foot Association. But what about those poor seats? It's the same seats week after week that aren't used -- you know, those seats in all four corners of Memorial Stadium. They're there to be sat on, sometimes stood on and occasionally slept on, no doubt in another IU defeat. Instead, they're usually limited to shining in the sun or collecting raindrops and empty cups. Poor, lonely seats.

6 athletes qualify for NCAA meet

Coach Randy Heisler did not have high expectations for his athletes going into this weekend's 15-team meet at Arizona State because of his team's recent intense training. Instead, he got a surprise from the three-day Baldy Castillo Invitational. The Hoosiers won six events and provisionally qualified six athletes for the NCAA Championships in six events.

Hoosiers have flawless weekend

Having just completed a road trip, the women's tennis team wanted to make a statement at the IU Tennis Center Saturday. Mission accomplished. The Hoosiers (10-6, 1-2 Big Ten) ripped through two opponents, defeating Illinois-Chicago in the morning and Butler in the afternoon, both by a flawless 7-0 score.

Cyclists ready for men's Little 500

Let's get one thing straight about Saturday's Men's Little 500: Nobody will lap the field like the Cutters did last year. This year's field is too deep and the riders are too evenly matched for one team to dominate the race. Unlike last year when only a few teams had a chance, a number of teams could take the checkered flag.

Team readies for conference tournament

If you had to label IU men's basketball coach Mike Davis as either a pessimist or an optimist, you would have to go with the latter. In an up-and-down season, Davis has spent much of this year with a positive outlook. He hit a low after the loss to Southern Illinois, but he has been optimistic since.

Welcome back

A little more than 12 hours after falling short in the NCAA championship game, a tired IU men's basketball team returned to Bloomington around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday and received a warm welcome from several hundred Hoosier fans. The IU faithful welcomed the team bus back from the airport and followed the Hoosiers inside Assembly Hall, where seniors Dane Fife and Jarrad Odle addressed the gathering of fans and media.

Going-away party

IU fans wanting to wish the IU men's basketball team luck and watch the final practice before its trip to Atlanta for the Final Four this weekend can attend an open practice and pep rally today at Assembly Hall. The doors open to the public at 4 p.m., and fans can sit on the East side of the arena to watch the final minutes of practice.

Threes reign in Hoosier victory

A box score would more than do justice to Saturday's battle between IU and Illinois. IU splattered the board with mind-boggling numbers: Like a school- and Big Ten-record 17 three-pointers. There were 46 first-half points and 42 more in the second half. There were five players in double figures. And there were three players with three or more three-pointers. But, in reality, all you need to sum up IU's 88-57 pounding of the No. 9 Illini in front of 17,456 wound-up fans in Assembly Hall is vocal evidence from the Illini themselves.

Hoosiers stay hot in Big Ten, take 3 of 4 from Iowa

The IU men's baseball team earned a tie for the first place position in the Big Ten after taking three of four games from Iowa this weekend at Sembower Field. The Hoosiers had a chance for a sweep yesterday but lost in a slugfest, 17-13.
