Hoosier track and field stumble at Championships

A balancing act

Phi Delta Theta senior Brian Drummy never rode in a Little 500 before Saturday's race. Even after his team's victory, Drummy said he still felt like he hadn't experienced the physical hardship of riding in the grueling 200-lap event. "I don't have a word to describe it," Drummy said. "It's everything you work for, and when it comes through, it doesn't even feel real. I don't even feel like I rode in the race today."

Defense falls apart against No. 7 Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE -- With their hospitalized coach on their minds, the Hoosiers played a close first half against No. 7 Purdue before their transition and post defense fell apart, allowing the Boilermakers to shoot nearly 62 percent after halftime.

Reaction to 'Brink' is mixed

Bobby Knight is a figure who seems to be constantly surrounded by controversy. So it comes as no surprise that the debut of the ESPN film "A Season on the Brink" about Knight's 1985-86 season at IU was met with a wide range of opinions and criticisms from the student body.

Runner excels in classroom

Many college students have a hard time managing their time. Many try to find the balance between studies and free time. Freshman Mindy Peterson is no exception. However, she has honors classes and a cross country schedule to deal with. And she has done both of these things very well. Peterson is one of the top runners for IU's cross country team. She has placed no worse than third for the team in all six of the races she has run in this season. With practices and classes, finding the time to do the things she wants isn't always easy. Practices range from sprint drills to long runs to lifting weights. Weekends don't even offer time off.

Owens to transfer next year

Freshman guard Andre Owens announced Friday that he will not return to the men's basketball team next season. Owens has been granted a release from his scholarship at IU and will transfer to another school after finishing the academic year. Owens said he wants to play for a team with a more up-tempo offense. Owens, a former Perry Meridian High School standout, met with coach Mike Davis Friday to inform him of his decision to transfer.

Seniors accept role, responsibility

Senioritis occurs when someone is close to graduating, and sometimes, they fail to turn in their work and lose motivation. Batting more than .330 with eight home runs and 68 RBIs combined, seniors Dan Haegele and Blake St. Clair don't have the time to worry about catching the mental laziness that plagues seniors around this time of the year. They'll be busy playing the top-ranked team in the Big Ten during graduation ceremonies Saturday.

Hoosiers defeat Wright State 14-6

Senior Gibran Hamdan's grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning instigated a 13-run inning that lifted IU over Wright St. 14-6 at Sembower Field last evening. The opposite field shot over the right field wall came one pitch after coach Bob Morgan was ejected from the game arguing balls and strikes.

Hoosiers shut down Spartans early

Leading up to last night's game, Coach Mike Davis praised Tom Izzo as the best coach in the country, mainly because of the way Izzo can get his No.25 Spartans to be more aggressive than anybody on the boards and defensively. But by the time there were a few minutes left in the game Tuesday night, Izzo could only run his hands through his hair, lean back in his chair and look up to the top of Assembly Hall. Another Michigan State turnover had led to another three-pointer, this one by Dane Fife to give the Hoosiers an 81-58 lead with just 2:33 left.

Confidence is key against Notre Dame

After two 1-0 wins last, the women's soccer team faces rival Notre Dame in South Bend tonight. "Notre Dame is obviously one of the best teams in the country," coach Joe Kelley said. "They are talented and deep. A lot of their players have international experience. "It is a great environment to play in, and I think we are ready. As a program, we have grown, and I think our players have gained confidence in their ability.

20-game road trip ends in home match

Home, sweet home. After the IU water polo team started its first 20 matches on the road, the No. 15 Hoosiers (11-9, 3-0 Collegiate Water Polo Association) play host to the Indiana Invite today and tomorrow at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center at the Student Recreational Sport Center.
