IU alum pursuing dream

Tom Brooks ran a personal best of 8 minutes, 36.3 seconds in the 3,000 meter steeplechase last week at the Cardinal Qualifier at Stanford University, allowing him to qualify for the U.S. Track & Field Olympic Trials. The days before the race, his second to last chance to qualify, Brooks said he was optimistic. "I'm super confident," said Brooks, heading into the twilight meet. "I'm not concerned. My times are coming down."

White Sox lead Windy City series

CHICAGO -- Miguel Olivo and Timo Perez homered, and the Chicago White Sox roughed up Greg Maddux and overcame two homers by Sammy Sosa to beat the Chicago Cubs 9-4 Sunday. The White Sox won two of three in the first crosstown series of the season. The teams meet again next weekend at Wrigley Field.

Indiana defeats Kentucky

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana was in a foul mood and made Kentucky pay for it. Courtney Lee scored 20 points, Mr. Basketball A.J. Ratliff added 17, and Indiana set an All-Star record by hitting 44-of-59 foul shots Saturday night for a 93-90 victory and a split of this year's two-game series. "In practice, we shoot at least 50 free throws a day. We know that down the stretch it may come to free throws," Ratliff said.

Chicago mayor open to Wrigley Field expansion

CHICAGO -- Chicago Mayor Richard Daley said he is open to a possible Wrigley Field expansion project, but he said the Chicago Cubs and the community will have to work together before the plan can win city approval.

2 IU golfers named All-Region IU juniors Jeff Overton and Heath Peters were named to the PING All-Midwest Region Team Wednesday. The Hoosier duo were two of 15 golfers selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America to the team.

Softball coach resigns The IU athletics department announced Wednesday that IU softball coach Sara Hayes Nottger has resigned to pursue other opportunities. IU must now replace a coach who in a short time helped turn a struggling program into a competitive contender for postseason play. "Sara has worked extremely hard in her two years here," said Athletics Director Terry Clapacs. "We appreciate her efforts and wish her well in the future."

Schumacher pulls away for U.S. Grand Prix win

INDIANAPOLIS -- Michael Schumacher used power to pass teammate Rubens Barrichello early, skill to hold him off at the midway point and then pulled away from the field to win Sunday's U.S. Grand Prix, his eighth win in nine tries this season. Schumacher avoided trouble in a race marred by crashes and cruised to a 2.9-second victory over Barrichello on the 13-turn, 2.605-mile road course. Japan's Takuma Sato was third, 22 seconds off the pace.

Cubs warming up, beat Oakland

CHICAGO -- Moises Alou hit a two-run homer and Carlos Zambrano won his fourth straight decision, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 5-3 win over the Oakland Athletics, Sunday. Zambrano (8-2) outpitched Oakland starter Barry Zito, giving up one run on five hits and striking out eight in 6 2-3 innings. The 23-year-old left to a standing ovation and lowered his ERA to 2.25 -- second-best in the National League behind Tom Glavine.

Griffey hits 500th career home run in Reds victory

ST. LOUIS -- Ken Griffey Jr. trotted around the bases as if it was just another home run. It was hardly that. Griffey hit a 2-2 pitch from Matt Morris into the right-field stands and went right into the record books as the 20th player to hit 500 home runs Sunday. The Cincinnati Reds star ended a frustrating stretch with his leadoff homer in the sixth inning, becoming the sixth-youngest player to hit 500, in a 6-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Offseason brings changes to IU

Coming off the school's first losing season in 30 years, and missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1985, the IU basketball program has seen a slew of changes during the off season. With the loss of assistant coaches John Treloar and Ben McDonald, IU coach Mike Davis brought in former Utah interim coach Kerry Rupp to help add discipline and organization to the Hoosier program. "My former coach in college attended a basketball camp that he conducted in Utah and said this guy is like a machine," Davis said. "I needed energy.

End of the Year Awards handed out

The IU athletics department announced its End of the Year Awards Wednesday, honoring several Hoosier athletes. Junior Sean Jefferson, the national indoor mile champion, was named IU Male Athlete of the Year, and the Big Ten women's golf medalist senior Danah Ford was awarded the IU Female Athlete of the Year honor.

Pistons put proclaimer in his place

Treloar leaves IU for position at LSU

A Dream Come True

Every four years U.S. Olympic hopefuls from across the nation gather for the opportunity to achieve the first step toward Olympic glory. The U.S. Diving Olympic Trials, held this weekend in St. Peters, Mo., gave 12 past and present Hoosiers a chance to condense four years of hard work, training and dedication into four days of intense, nail-biting competition.

IU gets new assistant

The men's basketball coaching carousel has stopped -- for now. IU men's basketball coach Mike Davis announced Friday the hiring of Kerry Rupp as an assistant coach for the Hoosiers in 2004-2005. Rupp, 50, will be replacing former IU assistant coach Ben McDonald, who resigned May 12.

Advertisement opens up AD search

IU makes strong showing at NCAAs

AUSTIN, Texas -- On the strength of four IU athletes, the men's track team finished 19th at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend at the University of Texas. Junior All-American Aarik Wilson solidified his status as one of the NCAA's top leapers as well as IU's best ever triple jumper. The Fallon, Nev., native began the weekend by finishing third in the long jump with a sizable personal best of 7.97 meters, third all-time at IU.

Search committee distributes advertisement for new athletic director

The committee for the new IU athletic director isn't wasting any time in getting the word out. IU Alumni Association President Ken Beckley released an advertisement specifying all qualifications and has called for submissions of nominations or applications. A deadline has been set for July 16, with the position being chosen in August. Included in the advertisement is a Web site address applicants can refer for more information on the athletic department and qualifications for the position. The address for the Web site is www.indiana.edu/~adsearch. Amongst the qualifications listed in the advertisement include a genuine commitment to academic and intercollegiate athletic excellence, and experience in fiscal planning and budget management.

Select Hoosiers head to NCAA Championships

Six Hoosiers have survived both the indoor and outdoor track and field season to arrive in Austin, Texas, for the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. IU's mix of qualifiers covers every discipline of the sport. Four already have All-American accolades from previous seasons, while a fifth makes his first appearance on the national stage. Sophomore All-American Sean Jefferson is a postseason veteran, having been at the apex of every level of competition since high school. After earning his first All-American award at the NCAA Cross Country Championships this fall, Jefferson won the 2004 NCAA Indoor Mile title in grand fashion with a 4 minutes, 0.16 seconds.
