2 Hoosiers sign Major League deals

With the Hoosier baseball season ending, two of the team's recent graduates will contniue to take their swings. The latest in a long line of talented Hoosier shortstops, IU senior Seth Bynum signed a contract with Major League Baseball's Montreal Expos franchise May 27, officially beginning his professional baseball career.

Overton currently tied for 10th place at NCAA Championships

When junior Jeff Overton teed off at the NCAA Championships Tuesday, he was determined not to shoot himself out of the tournament. Instead he shot an opening round 67 landing him in fourth place on the leaderboard after the first round of play. Although IU's team didn't qualify for the championships, the Big Ten Golfer of the Year qualified for the tournament by finishing as the top individual from a non-qualifying team at last week's NCAA Regionals in West Lafayette.

Doubles duo falls short in Elite Eight

With the season on the line for both IU's men's and women's tennis teams, the women's doubles duo of sophomore Sarah Batty and senior Linda Tran fell in the Elite Eight while men's junior Jakub Praibis fell in the second round of the men's singles championship.

Soggy Indy 500 doesn't dampen spirits

INDIANAPOLIS -- Before Buddy Rice took the checkered flag at the Indianapolis 500 Sunday, the rain had scared off about half of Kevin Kuehn's group of friends from Green Bay, Wis. But Kuehn, sporting a Coors Light hat and a red rain jacket, said after the race that the wait was worth it. "It's Indy," he said, as the track-side screen flashed a tornado warning. "We'll be back next year." The day at the track began and ended with ominous storm clouds and downpours, but somehow, amid a windy, stormy afternoon, there was time for 180 laps and an exciting finish -- a payoff for thousands of soggy, but enthusiastic, race fans.

Batty and Tran advance to final 8

The rest of the IU men's and women's tennis seasons might be over, but individual players on the teams are still leaving their mark on the NCAA singles and doubles championships. With a win Wednesday, the doubles duo of sophomore Sarah Batty and senior Linda Tran advanced to the final eight of the NCAA tournament doubles championship, while junior Jakub Praibis notched his first NCAA tournament win in the men's singles championship. After an opening round victory, Batty and Tran (14-3) advanced to the round of 16 to face off against junior Heather Saluri and senior Anda Perianu, the No. 17 team from Oklahoma. The Hoosiers had to go the distance in their first match, and a repeat performance would be needed in pursuit of a final eight spot.

Coaching legend finishes his career

Just a few months after losing IU soccer coach Jerry Yeagley to retirement, IU must say goodbye to another coaching legend. The IU athletics department announced on its Web site Wednesday that Sam Carmichael's 2003-04 season as IU women's golf coach would be his last.

Penske goes for 4th in a row

INDIANAPOLIS -- The sight was enough to make Indy 500 regulars gape in wonderment. There, climbing the fence alongside 2002 race winner Helio Castroneves, was team owner Roger Penske. The distinguished billionaire entrepreneur was calm amid the chaotic postrace scene, every gleaming white hair in place, his Marlboro Team Penske shirt still crisply starched despite a long, hot afternoon in the pits.

Hoosiers race into NCAA Regionals

Select members of the IU men's track team will catch a flight south today to compete at this weekend's NCAA Regional meet. This is the second year of the new NCAA qualifying format, which takes the top five individuals in each event from each of the five Regional meets, along with a number of at-large selections.

IU cycling takes top honors at Nationals

In a state known for its love of basketball, a new sport is becoming more and more popular and IU students are having no trouble finding success. Nine cyclists from the IU Cycling Club competed in the 2004 TREK Bikes Collegiate Road National Championships in Madison, Wis. The team traveled to Madison Friday for three days of intense racing.

Titan Series ends with Purdue win

Despite a come-from-behind victory Friday to open its weekend series with arch-rival Purdue, IU lost both games in Saturday's doubleheader. Sunday' s season finale was canceled due to bad weather, preventing the Hoosiers from tying the weekend series, cementing the Boilers' Titan Series victory. Purdue picked up the baseball point to increase its lead in the annual head-to-head challenge between the two rival schools. The final score of this year's Titan Series ended with Purdue winning 11-9. The losses also gave arch-rival Purdue the opportunity to compete in the Big Ten tournament as the No. 6 seed. Senior pitcher Nick Vitielliss threw his second complete game of the season, as he allowed three unearned runs in the second inning off an error by freshman third baseman Josh Richardson.

Miller time once again

INDIANAPOLIS -- Reggie Miller did what Reggie Miller does. After missing his first six shots, Miller drilled a 3-pointer with 31.7 seconds left to break the game's final tie and lead Indiana past Detroit 78-74 Saturday night in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals. "You knew it was coming," Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal said. "He's going to make one big-time shot, and he thrives on the biggest shot."

The State of the Game address

Just over 10 years ago, Michael Jordan, perhaps the most prolific athlete ever to walk the earth, retired from the game of basketball. His not-so-unexpected return to the Chicago Bulls in 1995, while enjoyable at first, was the beginning of the end. Everybody, including his "ego-ness" himself, knew it. Mike managed to string us all along for another eight years, finally retiring for good after last season, from the Washington Wizards.

Overton qualifies for Championships

The IU men's golf team failed to qualify for the NCAA Championships after finishing in a tie for 20th place in the NCAA Central Regionals in West Lafayette this weekend. However, junior Jeff Overton shot well, earning himself an individual berth in the Championships to be played June 1-4 in Hot Springs, Va.

'Titan'ic Rivalry

After being eliminated from the six-team Big Ten tournament, IU's baseball team will travel to West Lafayette looking to spoil Purdue's postseason hopes. The four-game series begins Friday, followed by a doubleheader Saturday and before the season finale Sunday. With just four more conference games left for the Big Ten, the Boilermakers presently sit in sixth place in the conference standings with Northwestern looming three games behind in seventh place. If IU sweeps Purdue, or even wins just three of the four games, they will open the door for Northwestern to tie Purdue in conference play and climb to sixth place by virtue of the overall record tie-breaker. In addition to attempting to spoil the Boilermakers' season, this weekend's series is important for the seniors, who would like nothing more than to end their careers on a good note.

Canadian team calls on Hoosier

IU sophomore center Sarah McKay earned a spot on the Canadian Senior Women's National Team after a productive showing at the team's open tryout held May 18 in Richmond, British Columbia. McKay, a native of Victoria, British Columbia, will compete in a series of four exhibition games against the Japanese National Team from June 4-8 before returning to the squad next summer for the 2005 FIBA Americas World Championships Qualifying Tournament. "I am very excited to get a chance to play for the Canadian National Team," McKay said. "It has been a dream of mine to do this for a long time, and I am honored to get this opportunity and look forward to the tryout."

8 Hoosier cyclists to race in collegiate road championships

It's not Little 500, and it's definitely not a ride in the park. This weekend eight IU students will travel to the 2004 TREK Bikes Collegiate Road National Championships in Madison, Wis., for three days of intense racing. The riders will compete in three different competitions -- the Criterium, Road Race and Team Time Trial.

Records fall as IU takes 4th at Big Ten Outdoors

The Big Ten Outdoor Championships at Purdue, held last weekend, brought IU's men's track and field team a fourth place finish while Wisconsin took home the top spot in the highly competitive meet. But IU garnered a number of outstanding results and provided several athletes with stepping stones to bigger and better things. Freshman All-American David Neville provided IU's top achievements.

Hoosiers make short drive The IU men's golf team will compete in the NCAA Central Regionals this weekend at Kampen Golf Course in West Lafayette. The Hoosiers are one of 26 teams competing at the Regionals, and are familiar with the Kampen course. "We've been working real hard this week preparing for the NCAA tournament," IU coach Mike Mayer said. "Obviously it is an outstanding field, and we will have to play a solid tournament to have a chance to advance to the NCAA finals." The Hoosiers, who finished in fifth place at the Big Ten Championships, boast Big Ten Golfer of the Year junior Jeff Overton and second team All-Big Ten junior Heath Peters.

Hoosiers postseason hopes dashed

The IU baseball team approached this weekend with ideas of stringing together crucial wins in the team's quest to make the Big Ten tournament. With the Michigan Wolverines taking three out of the four games this weekend, however, the Hoosiers' hopes and chances of a tournament berth were dealt a fatal blow. After a rainout for Friday's game, IU and Michigan played doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday. Senior pitcher Nick Vitielliss started the weekend on a good note with his first complete game of the season in the full nine-inning game. Seniors Seth Bynum, Kevin Mahar and Ryan Donley all contributed to the scoring in their final home victory, 4-1. "It felt good to get a complete game for my final game, but the rest of the weekend didn't go so well," Vitielliss said.
