IU upsets No. 24 Oregon Ducks 30-24

Christmas came early for the IU football team Saturday after Oregon surrendered seven turnovers in the Hoosiers' 30-24 upset victory over the Ducks in Eugene, Ore. IU came into the game as a 20-point underdog. Throughout the game the Hoosier defense showed impressive play by forcing four fumbles in the first half and caused Oregon quarterback junior Kellen Clemens to throw three interceptions, two of them occurring in the fourth quarter.

No ducking IU

One week ago in a 41-10 rout of Central Michigan University, defense was the name of the game for the Hoosiers. With stellar play from both the defensive and special teams units, IU easily handled CMU for the easy win. After Saturday's 30-24 upset of the No. 24 Oregon Ducks, it can be said that not much changed in a week. While the Ducks are a far cry from the Chippewas, the Hoosier defense stayed true to last week's performance, forcing seven turnovers including four fumbles and three interceptions.

Women's soccer upsets Auburn, FIU The IU women's soccer team traveled to another tournament this past weekend and once again came home with a pair of wins. After a 5-1 victory over Florida International University, the Hoosiers upset No. 18 ranked Auburn Saturday on junior Robin Barker's goal that proved enough to upend the Tigers and finish the tournament with a 1-0 upset.

Second place finish familiar for IU

Coming off a second place finish in last week's IU Credit Union Invitational, the IU women's volleyball team traveled south to take part in the 2004 Arlington/Hilton University of Texas-Arlington Invitational over the weekend.

Wins against Appalachian St., Lindenwood push record to 4-1

The IU field hockey team extended its winning streak to four with a 4-0 win versus Appalachian State University Saturday afternoon at the Mellencamp Pavilion. The Hoosiers improved their record to 4-1 with the only loss coming in their first game away against University of California-Berkeley. Sophomore Morgan Miller struck first for IU with the only goal in the first half, coming off of sophomore Lydia Schrott's assist. Miller also chalked up an assist to junior Mallory Reabold late in the second half.

Hoosiers finish ninth in fall's 1st tourney

The first tournament of the season could have been kinder to the Hoosiers. Thanks to impressive performances by Big Ten rivals and a lack of sharp play, the IU men's golf team finished ninth in a field of 14 teams at the Michigan/Radrick Farms Intercollegiate. As a team, the Hoosiers shot 886 (297, 293, 296), good enough to tie for ninth place with Miami (Ohio), 15 shots behind tournament co-champions Wisconsin, Purdue and Memphis.

Federer breezes to third major title

NEW YORK -- Roger Federer is at his best against the best, when it counts the most, and he was pretty much perfect in the U.S. Open final. Federer became the first man since 1988 to win three majors in a year, thoroughly outclassing Lleyton Hewitt 6-0, 7-6 (3), 6-0 Sunday to add the American Grand Slam title to those he took at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Debuts highlight opening weekend

Lions 20, Bears 16 CHICAGO -- Finally, a road win for the Detroit Lions. Detroit ended its NFL-record 24-game streak of futility away from home Sunday, rallying to beat the mistake-prone Chicago Bears 20-16 in Lovie Smith's debut as head coach. Bracy Walker, who earlier returned a blocked field goal 92 yards for a third-quarter touchdown, intercepted a third-down pass in the end zone by Rex Grossman with 18 seconds to go, preserving the win.

Marlins split series with 11-1 win over Cubs CHICAGO -- Juan Pierre had three of Florida's 15 hits, A.J. Burnett pitched eight strong innings and the Marlins beat the Chicago Cubs 11-1 Sunday to earn a split of their four-game series. Alex Gonzalez hit a two-run double and Paul Lo Duca added a two-run single for the Marlins, who entered the day 2 1/2 games behind the Cubs in the NL wild-card race.

Hoosiers extend winning streak to 22 games in Memorial Tournament

South Bend -- Two storied college sports programs participated in their respective sports in South Bend this weekend as the IU men's soccer team took its No. 1 ranking and 2-0 record into the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament against the Cal-State Fullerton Titans (0-2) Friday and Evansville Sunday. The defending national champions knocked off the Titans with a 2-1 win before shutting out Evansville 4-0.

IU stuns No. 24 Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. - Matt LoVechhio threw for a touchdown and Benjarvus Green-Ellis ran for 91 yards and another score, to lead Indiana to a 30-24 upset of No. 24 Oregon 30-24 on Saturday and its first 2-0 start since 1996. The Hoosiers, who won only two games all of last season, opened with a 41-10 rout of Central Michigan.

Hoosiers looking to extend win streak

Hurricane Ivan threatens Hoosiers

If Hurricane Ivan stays away, as the IU women's soccer team hopes it does, the team will have a chance to rebound from its loss to Ball State University when it travels to Coral Gables, Fla., this weekend for the Miami Invitational. Senior Kim Grodek said last weekend's loss was tough but it also was a learning experience for the team and an opportunity to see where the team still needs work.

IU swings into fall season

After another full summer of preparation, the IU men's golf team will begin its fall 2004 season Saturday at the Michigan-Radrick Farms Intercollegiate in Ann Arbor, Mich. Due to an experienced returning lineup and several strong summer performances, the Hoosiers are feeling confident entering the season.

Repub. Daniels proposes Colts license plate INDIANAPOLIS - Republican gubernatorial candidate Mitch Daniels wants Indiana to join other states that offer professional sports license plates, saying one for the NFL's Colts could help keep the team in Indianapolis.

DUCKHUNTING

After an opening season win over Central Michigan University, 41-10, the Hoosiers (1-0) take to the road and head west to face the No. 24 University of Oregon Ducks (0-0) at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Playing on the road is a fact the Hoosiers will have to deal with this season, as six of their 11 games are away from Memorial Stadium.

Jones leads on field, in classroom

In the summer of 2000, the now fifth-year senior Herana-Daze Jones began freshman football camp at IU. His outstanding athletic career in high school would enable him to receive an excellent education all the while playing with the best of the best in Division I football.
