Hoosiers claim 16th place and 24 All-Americans at NCAAs

·

The No. 13-ranked Hoosiers may have seemed to take a small step back with a 16th-place finish in the 2005 NCAA Championships. But ask the team and the members will tell you their finish in Minneapolis was certainly a small step forward toward a brighter future.

IU slips by ranked Purdue, Illinois

·

Like a broken record, the No. 43 Hoosiers again slipped past No. 61 Purdue and No. 51 Illinois in this weekend's 4-3 road wins. Last year, IU beat both teams the same way -- with 4-3 victories.

Illinois shows its mettle in getting to Final Four

·

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Deron Williams looked up at the scoreboard, frowned and shook his head. Down 15 with only four minutes to go, Illinois' season of triumph was about to slip away. All those victories, that near-perfect record, a path to the Final Four that seemed tailor-made for the Illini -- none of it would matter.

A trip that was supposed to feature three games in three days only featured one, due to a rain cancellation on Friday. ·

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - And to think it used to take only two days to play 72 holes of championship golf. The Players Championship turned into a wet, controversial mess Sunday when yet another round of storms all but promised to extend the PGA Tour's most prestigious event into six days, most of that spent indoors.

the field is Set

·

Saturday had all the makings of a traditional Little 500 qualifications afternoon; the weather was gloomy and cool, crowds of fans sporadically showed up to Bill Armstrong Stadium to cheer on their favorite team and the usual suspects -- Alpha Tau Omega, Cutters and Phi Gamma Delta -- all finished in the top five.

Illini end Panthers' Cinderella run

·

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Standing at midcourt, Deron Williams and Dee Brown grinned at each other and slapped hands. It's tough enough stopping one of Illinois' standout guards when he's having a good night. Make it two, and that's just not a fair fight.

·

On the basketball court, 6 feet, 7 inches doesn't usually raise eyebrows. However 6 feet, 7 inches on the football field is something that makes red-shirt freshman wide receiver James Hardy stand out amongst crowd.

IU-Purdue rivalry: 2 stories for 2 tennis teams

·

For the IU men's tennis team, it's time to end an unpopular streak. The past nine times the Hoosiers have faced their archrival Purdue, the Boilermakers have come away with a win. IU will look to end that stint Saturday when it plays host to Purdue at 2 p.m. at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts.

Team also dominates in the classroom

·

Anyone who has been watching the NCAA basketball tournament has seen the commercial saying, "There are 360,000 NCAA student-athletes, and just about all of us will be going pro in something other than sports."

'Track' goes to Stanford while 'field' goes to Fla.

·

Normally when a sports team competes it competes as a single unit; however, this is not the case this weekend for IU Women's Track and Field. This weekend, the IU squad will split apart and compete at two different venues for two different meets.

Track teams roll into 2005 outdoor seasons

·

Still buzzing off its fifth-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships two weeks ago, the men's track team is hopping a plane to Gainesville for the Florida Relays. The meet will serve as IU's outdoor debut, and allow IU a chance to get used to competing in an uncontrollable climate and also to chase regional qualifying marks.

IU women hold recent edge with Boilers

·

History often repeats itself. And hopefully, that will hold true for IU's women's tennis team in this weekend's road matches against No. 51 Purdue and No. 61 Illinois. The No. 27 Hoosiers (7-7, 1-0 Big Ten) will make their way to West Lafayette for Saturday's 9 a.m. match against the Boilermakers (2-8, 0-1), a team they barely dodged in last spring's 4-3 match.
