Pacers' Jackson says NBA dress code racist

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana guard Stephen Jackson believes the NBA's new ban on bling-bling is racially motivated but says he will abide by the rules. The NBA has announced that a dress code will go into effect at the start of the season. Players will be required to wear business-casual attire when involved in team or league business. They can't wear visible chains, pendants or medallions over their clothes.

IU hopes Midwest Regional meet will light doubles fire

Members of the IU men's tennis team have been preaching the need for match experience since early fall. Starting today, they will get their chance by playing some of the best singles players and doubles tandems in the Midwest. "I expect everyone to come out and play pretty hard, from all the schools," senior Neil Kenner said. "It's a pretty tough tournament, but I think our guys could do well."

Hoosiers take bite out of Bulldogs

When freshmen forward Kevin Noschang and midfielder Brad Ring entered last night's game against Butler, the IU men's soccer team had only attempted three shots and was tied with the visiting Bulldogs. When the halftime whistle blew 14 minutes later, the Hoosiers registered 12 shots and two goals on their way to a 6-0 victory.

IU splits weekend series with No. 5 Grand Valley State

As AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" blasted from the speakers at the Frank Southern Center in Bloomington Friday night, the IU hockey team skated on to the ice to begin their journey for their first national championship. IU split its first series match-up of the season, losing 2-1 Friday and winning 7-4 Saturday, against the No. 5 Grand Valley State Lakers. Even though IU outshot GVSU 61-37 Friday, the Hoosiers couldn't put the puck in the net. Penalties and goaltending were the themes of the game as GVSU senior goaltender Chris Moore recorded 60 saves for the Lakers, now 6-2.

Hoosiers look toward freshmen after strong fall

While most other IU fall sports are just hitting the midpoint of their seasons, the men's golf team is already done for the fall and won't play again until February. Head coach Mike Mayer used the last tournament of the season to get his younger players three more rounds of tournament golf before the winter break and subsequent spring season. In fact, the lineup at last week's Xavier Invitational was composed of four freshmen and a sophomore, a first for the IU golf program.

Shortstop makes her mark in preseason

When freshman Stephanie Pellerito first stepped into a batter's box, she hated it. She was five years old playing tee-ball on an all-boys team with her brother in Santa Anna, Calif. She didn't even want to play in the first place -- her dad made her. Four high school all-league honors and two travel team All-America honors later, Pellerito is happily playing softball. And she's glad her dad made her stick with it.

Here are 'Da Superfans'

Four IU freshmen unintentionally sat together at their first IU men's soccer game in 2003. Two years later, they're still in the front row of every home soccer match. Now as juniors, Matt Bueter, David Fridley, Nelson Spade and John Fischer have shirts on their backs proclaiming their group, along with the numerous other groupies known as 'Da Superfans. Spade said what was already a close fan-to-team relationship is now a closer connection for students cheering for the two-time defending national champions because of the unity a common T-shirt brings.

Offense returns, record falls in win

INDIANAPOLIS -- High scores have returned to the Indianapolis Colts as the team woke up in the second quarter of their Monday night game to score 45 points in three quarters, beating the Rams 45-28. The Colts came from 17 down to win the game, remain undefeated and hand Peyton Manning another record in the process. He and Marvin Harrison broke the all-time quarterback to receiver touchdown record in the fourth quarter with their 86th scoring connection, passing San Francisco's Steve Young and Jerry Rice. Things couldn't be much better in Indianapolis.

Plotkin wins 2nd Big Ten accolade

The Big Ten conference named senior midfielder Brian Plotkin its offensive player of the week Monday after the Lisle, Ill., native scored in each of the Hoosiers' two weekend games. Plotkin is the first repeat winner of the award this season, first earning the accolade Oct. 5.

Men's Basketball: 11,000 provide Hoosiers with hysteria

It takes brains to skip an entire grade, but it took sophomore guard A.J. Ratliff to jump one. Ratliff, who shared Friday's Hoosier Hysteria slam dunk crown with senior forward Marco Killingsworth, first wowed spectators by leaping over sophomore guard Adam Ahlfeld for a one-handed throw-down.

Auburn proves too much for young Hoosier swimmers The Auburn Tigers proved to be too hot for the Hoosiers' swimming and diving team to handle as the team displayed their dominance with a 165-124 win over IU Friday in Auburn, Ala. The Hoosiers' opposition showed that a sizeable amount of talent has carried over from last year's squad, which finished as the NCAA runner-up.

Women's Soccer: IU's roller coaster season continues

The IU women's soccer team's roller coaster season continued this weekend -- hitting the low early, losing to Northwestern Friday, but peaking with a win against Wisconsin yesterday. The split over the weekend moved IU to 6-8-1 overall. With three games left, the Hoosiers are looking for a spot in the top eight in the Big Ten to make the conference tournament. Before Friday's game, the Hoosiers sat in eighth place.

Men's Soccer: IU handed another OT disappointment

For the fifth time this season the IU men's soccer team ended regulation with a tie. For the fifth time this season the team ended overtime without a victory. And in that fifth time, the Hoosiers ended overtime tied with Northwestern University 1-1 Sunday. IU improved its record to 8-1-4 and its Big Ten record to 2-1-2 after tying the Wildcats and beating the University of Wisconsin on a weekend road trip.

Football: IU's dynamic duo continues to shatter records

Perhaps Blake Powers has powers of prophecy. Earlier in the week, the sophomore quarterback discussed breaking Antwaan Randel El's record for touchdown passes in a single-season. Impressive numbers, he said, were only impressive if they helped IU to victories.

Chicago claims AL title in 6-3 win

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Not since Shoeless Joe Jackson have the Chicago White Sox caused this much of a commotion. World Series, here they come for the first since 1959. A.J. Pierzynski came out on the right side of yet another umpiring ruckus, Jose Contreras pitched Chicago's fourth straight complete game and the White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-3 to win the AL championship series in five games.

Women's Basketball: Valentin reclaims 3-point title

With the fight song blaring and the cream and crimson crowd on its feet, the IU women's basketball team took the court for the first time this season during Hoosier Hysteria Friday night. "It was a big asset to be in front of 10,000 fans or however many there were," first-year IU coach Sharon Versyp said. "We were able to sell ourselves to the fans and get them excited about our program."

Volleyball: Hoosiers stumble against Wisconsin, Northwestern

Road trips continued to treat the IU women's volleyball team harshly this weekend, as the team came away winless against both Northwestern and Wisconsin. The Hoosiers cited failed passing attempts, weak serves and a breakdown in communication for their two losses. "We just didn't play together against either (squad)," senior Rachel Gerling said. "When we lose the first set, we get down on ourselves. That's what we did last night (against Wisconsin)." The Badgers took down the Hoosiers 3-0 (30-14, 30-25, 30-12) in the first match Friday. The red and white took down the cream and crimson offense, overpowering the Hoosiers' killing percentage of .081 with a .413 percentage of their own. Gerling came out firing for IU with 10 individual kills, followed by freshman Erica Short, who added seven.

Game of give and take

The football team giveth and the football team taketh away. Like a child playing in a bathtub turning tides, a game of momentum in Iowa City went back and forth. "It's hard to get momentum on the road," coach Terry Hoeppner said at the post-game press conference. For the adolescents of the Big Ten, a team which has grown up rapidly before the eyes of every Hoosier, seizing the lead remained a problem.
