IU squares off against Irish in tourney

The IU men's soccer team enters the NCAA Tournament looking to do something no team has done in championship history of the program: win three national championships in a row. After a first-round bye, the No. 3-seeded Hoosiers begin their quest for a three-peat when they play host to Notre Dame 7 p.m. Tuesday. Because this is an NCAA event, students will be charged $7 for tickets.

Hoosiers say goodbye to seniors

With his surgically-repaired left hand bound in a thick cast, senior linebacker John Pannozzo put on his No. 34 Hoosier uniform and pads for the very last time Saturday. Pannozzo and the other IU seniors hoped that by the end of the day they would raise the Old Oaken Bucket high for more than 50,000 fans in Memorial Stadium to see. Instead, they held their heads high after a season finale loss.

Three IU players rewrote their personal history books Friday night after the 99-65 victory over Nicholls State in Assembly Hall. Among the Hoosiers posting career-best performances was senior forward Marco Killingsworth. The Auburn transfer showed the Hoosier faithful what they were missing last season -- posting career highs in points, rebounds, assists and blocks.

After 'hard week' of practice, Hoosiers ready for weekend

IU will tip off the 2005 regular season against the Lady Bears at 6 p.m. Saturday in Assembly Hall.

I'm waiting to be impressed

I 'm issuing a challenge right now. If the Hoosiers want to impress me in their opening game tonight against Nicholls State, they have to accomplish a few easy tasks. In a matchup like this one, winning simply isn't enough. When you're playing a tiny school that happened to go 6-21 last year while playing in the Southland Conference, you need to make a statement. Nicholls State's football team came to Bloomington in early September and nearly pulled one of the biggest (and most embarrassing) upsets in school history. But luckily you can't run the triple option in basketball, so I think we're OK.

After 2 injury-filled years, Kline ready to make impact

During his freshman year, Sean Kline threw Assembly Hall into a frenzy with a between-the-legs slam that won him the Hoosier Hysteria dunk contest. In his junior year, Kline threw Assembly Hall into a frenzy of a different sort -- one of heckels and boos.

Old Oaken Rivals

Hoosier fans clad in black and red stormed the rain-soaked Memorial Stadium field after the game. They leapt out of the stands and made their way to one of the goalposts, pushing and tugging away at it in a mass of celebration. With a 13-7 victory, IU was able to weld its bronze block "I" onto the chain of the Old Oaken Bucket. That was four years ago.

Pujols tops Lee, Jones for NL MVP

NEW YORK -- Albert Pujols started his career with four startling seasons, equal or better than those of many Hall of Famers. Only Barry Bonds always did better -- until this year. Pujols won his first National League MVP award Tuesday, beating Andruw Jones in a close vote that didn't include Bonds, who missed most of the season because of a knee injury.

Socializing, snow bring IU Ski Club together

Although southern Indiana isn't known for its ski and snowboarding communities, the IU Ski Club manages to bring together winter recreation and social activity. "I love the Ski Club because everyone's so chill," sophomore Kiri Crane said. "It's just an awesome, laid back group of people that are all brought together by something we love: snow." The club always tries to have some type of an event, whether it is a barbecue, social party or a lake outing every two weeks. In addition to the events, the club also plans weekly outings to nearby ski resort Paoli Peaks. However, for the members of the club, nothing tops the yearly trip they take to a major ski and snowboarding resort.

Davis sets desired return dates for 3 Hoosiers, adds recruit

IU coach Mike Davis set tentative return dates for all three of his sidelined players Tuesday after practice. Pending any unforeseen complications, Davis said he hopes to have sophomore guard A.J. Ratliff back in uniform by the Nov. 26 game at Western Illinois University. Ratliff has been shooting, dribbling and passing in practice for more than a week with the assistance of a protective cast on his right hand. Junior guard Rod Wilmont will be out of street clothes by Friday night's season opener and should see court time by Monday's game against Florida A & M University. Wilmont hasn't played in either of the Hoosiers' two exhibition games because of "in house" issues. But as Davis joked at practice, he has "taken the braces off (Wilmont's) ankles."

Hoosiers retool, earn No. 10 preseason rank

After a successful season, many teams use the offseason to rebuild and repeat the success they had the previous season. The IU wrestling team, which finished ninth in last season's NCAA tournament is different. Rather than rebuilding, it has renovated its team in an attempt to finish stronger and has earned a No. 10 preseason ranking. "We have good talent back and some good young talent coming in," IU coach Duane Goldman said.

Bears linemen fight; Miller breaks jaw

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Bears center Olin Kreutz will not be suspended by Chicago coach Lovie Smith for breaking teammate Fred Miller's jaw in a fight last week. The players admitted Monday they had the fight. Smith, obviously unhappy he wasn't told the truth about what happened until late last week, said he won't suspend the players but will discipline them. He wouldn't be specific, but fines are expected. Miller needed surgery last week after initially saying he hurt his jaw in a fall at his home last Monday.

2 Hoosiers among final 4 at Big Ten Championship

Two of the four participants of the semifinals in the Big Ten Indoor Singles Tennis Championships represented the cream and crimson. However, senior Dmytro Ishtuganov and sophomore Dara McLoughlin both fell to tournament champion Nolan Polley of Wisconsin.
