Home not so humble as 3 ranked opponents come to Bloomington

The comforts of home might not be evident this weekend as the Hoosiers welcome the University of Notre Dame, Louisiana State University and Kansas State University to Bloomington. All three finished in the top 100 of last season's Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. And all three will highlight the field at this weekend's Hoosier Classic.

Big Ten stakes ride high as IU welcomes Penn State

In the past two weeks, Penn State has faced two ranked opponents: No. 23 UCLA needed a goal in the final minutes to win 1-0, and No. 16 University of Maryland fell in a one-goal game.

Hoosiers head north with hopes of 2 Big Ten wins

The IU women's soccer team is hoping two matches against Michigan teams will equal two wins this weekend. The Hoosiers are looking for their first two Big Ten wins this weekend when they play host to Michigan and Michigan State after losing at Penn State and Minnesota last weekend.

Another difficult field awaits IU in South Bend

The saying "Our sport is your sport's punishment" is one commonly found on the back of a cross country runner's shirt. While some athletes shy away from the activity, those on the IU women's cross country team wouldn't dream of doing anything else. Despite the negative stereotype placed on running, a nationally recognized program like IU's cannot be ignored.

Playing with perspective

For freshman midfielder Molly Kruger, losing a soccer game doesn't hurt quite as much as it used to. A losing record and zero Big Ten wins hold a little less importance after nearly losing her life in a car accident in June of last year.

The Atlanta Braves tried to hold off the celebration. It didn't work. The Braves wrapped up their 14th straight division championship Tuesday night while playing the Colorado Rockies, the NL East title assured midway through the game when the second-place Phillies lost to the New York Mets.

IU field hockey earns 1st ever top-10 national ranking

Fresh off its upset of then-No. 6 Michigan State, the IU field hockey team cracked the top 10 yesterday for the first time in program history. The National Field Hockey Coaches Association bumped the Hoosiers up to No. 8 in this week's rankings after being ranked No. 11 last week. The Spartans dropped to No. 9 after IU's 3-2 overtime win this weekend.

IU rolls again in final non-conference match

The IU volleyball team bent slightly in its third game, but would not break Tuesday night against in-state rival University of Evansville, claiming a 3-1 victory over the Purple Aces at University Gym (30-27, 30-20, 31-33, 30-19). The win moved IU's record to 8-6 on the season, and dropped Evansville's record to 5-12.

Jets QB out for season with torn rotator cuff

NEW YORK -- Jets quarterback Chad Pennington will miss the rest of the season because of a torn right rotator cuff, The Associated Press learned Monday night. Pennington's injury was confirmed by a person with knowledge of his condition but who declined to be identified because the team had not made an official announcement. An MRI exam showed Pennington tore his rotator cuff in Sunday's 26-20 overtime loss to Jacksonville. The NFL Network originally reported the injury, the second time Pennington has had this tear in less than a year.

Summer abroad leaves Gerling with lessons in life, volleyball

IU senior outside hitter Rachel Gerling has been all over the place lately -- making kills at the net, lunging for deep digs and shutting out the opposition with her blocks. She has been making a name for herself with an impressive 3.20 kills per game, 37 service aces, 158 digs and she is the third best blocker for the Hoosiers, averaging 1.02 blocks every time she steps on the court. This past summer, the six-foot senior added another notch to her resume -- a trip to Italy. "I studied studio art and Italian in Florence," Gerling said. "But the best part of the whole trip was getting to experience things that a normal tour wouldn't have given me."

Hoosiers upset No. 6 Michigan State

The IU women's field hockey team finally removed what junior forward Lydia Schrott described as "a huge thorn in our side" Saturday. The No. 11 Hoosiers upset No. 6 Michigan State in a double overtime thriller, 3-2. The victory marks the first time the Hoosiers have defeated the Spartans in eight attempts, and the first time the Hoosiers have opened Big Ten Conference play with a win.

IU shows steady improvement in sloppy weekend

A little wet weather wasn't enough to throw off the IU women's golf team this weekend at the Lady Northern Invitational. Playing with a home course advantage certainly helped the Hoosiers through the rough conditions as they finished fifth with a team score of 909.

Hoosiers finish 8th in Wolverine Intercollegiate

The IU men's golf team played its way to an eighth- place finish in the Wolverine Intercollegiate Sunday, shooting a three-round total of 862 at the University of Michigan Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Singles sizzle; doubles disappoint

This weekend's sweet singles performances gave IU head coach Ken Hydinger every reason to smile. It was the doubles play that left a sour taste in his mouth. "I feel like we are ahead of where I thought we would be at this point of the season in singles," Hydinger said in a press release. "But we still have work to do to get where we need to be. We will continue to work hard and improve."

IU splits Michigan matches to open Big Ten

On its second try, the IU volleyball team accomplished something this weekend that took seven tries last season: It won a conference match. The Hoosiers dropped their Big Ten opener Friday to Michigan State University in four games (29-31, 30-23, 22-30, 24-30) before evening up their conference record at 1-1 with a five-game victory over the University of Michigan (27-30, 30-22, 18-30, 30-27, 15-12). IU won only two conference games all last year.

Hoosiers disappointed in 15th-place Invite finish

Going into this weekend's Roy Griak Invitational in Minnesota, the IU women's cross country team had strong expectations of a top five finish. However, the team fell considerably short of its goal. Out of 31 teams, the Hoosiers finished in the No. 15 position.
