Neville paces IU as Hoosiers showcase talent in Arkansas

The IU men's track and field team traveled to Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend to compete against some of the nation's premier programs at the annual Tyson Invitational. Unhampered by the sluggishness that often accompanies traveling for meets, the men's squad posted six top-10 finishes at the Randal Tyson Track Center.

NCAA changes replay rules, hopes to shorten games

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA will give college football coaches at least one replay challenge per game next season and require conferences to use a universal review format if Thursday's recommended changes by the rules committee are approved in March.

When IU steps on the mat Friday for senior night to face No. 8 Penn State, the No. 16 Hoosiers will also be up against history. The Hoosiers have never beaten Penn State. The two schools have faced each other seven times in dual meets, with Penn State's 20-19 win in 1999 the closest the Hoosiers have ever come to topping the Nittany Lions.

IU rebounds with win versus PSU

The Hoosiers did not let some early difficulties get in the way of their seventh Big Ten win last night, picking up a 58-43 victory against Penn State. Both teams struggled in the first half offensively, but a late Hoosier run powered by senior forward Brigett Branson gave IU a six-point cushion going into the break. Branson came into the game averaging two points per game, but finished the night with eight points, four rebounds and three assists.

8 Olympians suspended after failing drug tests

TURIN, Italy -- Eight cross-country skiers competing in the Olympics, including two Americans, were suspended for five days after they were found to have excessive hemoglobin levels, the International Ski Federation announced Thursday.

KAPOLEI, Hawaii -- Peyton Manning is still answering questions about his perceived inability to win the big one. Edgerrin James is talking about the possibility of playing elsewhere. And several of their teammates in Hawaii for Sunday's Pro Bowl say they can't wait until next year, an often-used refrain with this bunch. The Colts were the NFL's glamour team for most of the 2005 season. That is, until their first playoff game, that is -- a 21-18 loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Steelers.

Hoosiers prepare for Penn State

On New Year's Day the IU women's basketball team (12-10, 6-5) snapped Penn State's 26-game home conference winning streak. Thursday night, the Lady Lions will be on the hunt for revenge to restore their pride. IU head coach Sharon Versyp expects Penn State to be looking for payback in Assembly Hall.

Davis wastes no time in motivating team for Iowa

MADISON, Wisc. -- Forget Vegas. What happens in the IU locker room stays in the IU locker room. For more than half an hour IU coach Mike Davis kept his team in the Kohl Center locker room after a 72-54 loss to Wisconsin -- its second worst of the season. As has been the case all season, what was said after the game wasn't shared outside closed doors.

'Wild Night' for Hoosiers ends in loss

MADISON, Wisc. -- John Mellencamp's "Wild Night" rang out over the loud speakers of the Kohl Center during a second half timeout. But there were no Hoosiers wild about Wednesday night's meeting between Wisconsin and IU. The No. 21 Hoosiers (13-7, 5-4) fell to the Badgers 72-54 and had one of their worst shooting performances of the season.

Hoosiers take 2 games from Wolverines

For the past two weekends the IU Hockey team has struggled to finish off teams, blowing leads in two contests. This weekend proved to be a different story for the Hoosiers. The resurgent bunch never looked back against Michigan, sweeping the Wolverines 5-1 and 4-1 in Bloomington.

NFL defends Super Bowl officiating

Two days later, the NFL defended the officiating in the Super Bowl, and Joe Montana defended himself. After the Steelers beat the Seahawks 21-10 in the NFL title game, the league said Tuesday that no mistakes were made by the game officials, although Seattle coach Mike Holmgren might disagree.
