Maybe all the Indianapolis Colts needed was a pick-me-up from the IU Marching Hundred.
At his weekly press conference Tuesday, IU coach Bill Lynch could think of no better phrase to describe Kalamazoo, Mich., than as a “hornet’s nest.”
Most freshmen are lucky to know a handful of familiar faces when they arrive on campus for their first semester in Bloomington. IU freshman goalkeeper Michael Munroe, one of the newest members of the IU men’s soccer team, lucked out and had a close friend – and sibling – waiting to show him around. That person was his older brother, senior goalkeeper Chris Munroe.
The Big Ten Network reached an agreement on Thursday with satellite TV provider Dish Network, expanding the reach of the new channel.
Rick Ankiel isn’t just hitting, he’s turning into a force.
Concerns? Tommie Harris has a few. They won’t disappear until the Pro Bowl defensive tackle makes his first cut or delivers a hit in the Chicago Bears’ opener at San Diego on Sunday.
This weekend, IU will stay in the Hoosier state as they travel north to Valparaiso, Ind., to compete in the Valparaiso University Popcorn Classic. This will be the third tournament the Hoosiers have participated in so far this season, and the team will have one more next weekend before conference play begins. Senior right side Lauren Ditteon feels the previous tournaments have helped the team gel as a unit.

Peyton Manning grew up in New Orleans, the favorite son in a city where his father, Archie, was considered royalty. Drew Brees grew up in Texas, an overlooked high school recruit who eventually resurrected Purdue’s image as Quarterback U.
More than half of the nation’s high school students participated in sports last year, and for the first time, more than 3 million of them were girls. The National Federation of State High School Associations released the results of its annual participation survey on Wednesday, listing a record 7,342,910 high school athletes in the 2006-07 school year among its member associations in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. It’s the 18th straight year the number of participants has increased. “This is certainly another great report,” NFHS executive director Robert F. Kanaby said. “The girls participation figure is particularly exciting since this year is the 35th anniversary of Title IX.”
Pssst. Eric Gordon. Yeah, you, Mr. North Central basketball star. Heard you came to Bloomington last weekend -- unofficially, of course. Heard you chatted with coach Kelvin Sampson and even grabbed a couple bites at Yogi's. Been thinking about trying on a pair of candy-striped pants?

While IU fought to upset No. 2-ranked UCLA on the pitch last Sunday, four alumni of the IU men’s soccer team were fighting a battle of their own in Major League Soccer. The Columbus Crew hosted the Colorado Rapids, where Danny O’Rourke, Jed Zayner, and Ned Grabavoy of the Crew played against Jacob Peterson of the Rapids. All four men played on the 2004 Hoosier squad that won the College Cup on penalty kicks against UC-Santa Barbara. Today, the former national champions find themselves on professional teams fighting to make the playoffs. The Crew and the Rapids went into Sunday’s game tied for the eighth and final MLS playoff spot, but the Rapids would win the tiebreaker over the Crew with a greater goal differential on the season. Before the match, Zayner said he thought the game would be a launching pad for the Crew for the remainder of the season.
The Indianapolis Colts would do almost anything to avoid slowing down.
