IU heads to Muncie to play Ball State

Two games into the young season, the IU women’s basketball team will travel to Muncie to take on the Ball State Cardinals in the Hoosiers’ first road game of the year. The Hoosiers are 2-0 after home wins over Albany and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

IU loses to Purdue; set to host Michigan

Last Wednesday, the IU volleyball team faced off against rival Purdue for the second time this season. After tQaking the first game 30-16, the Hoosiers dropped the match by losing three straight games, 23-30, 26-30, 24-30, respectively. Although IU dropped to 15-14 after the match, they gave Purdue the worst one-game loss the Boilermakers have suffered since 2002.

Purdue is last home game for seniors

The late Jerry Garcia once sang, “What a long, strange trip it’s been.” Truer words couldn’t be spoken about the four years the 16 seniors on the IU football team have experienced. Their journey wearing the cream and crimson comes to an end at Memorial Stadium on Saturday when the Hoosiers host rival Purdue with the Old Oaken Bucket at stake.

Thomas gives IU more post presence

IU is down by one point. One-and-two-tenths seconds remain in overtime. Junior forward DeAndre Thomas is on the line about to shoot two free throws. After a couple of dribbles, Thomas calmly sinks the first free throw. One shot remains to give the Hoosiers the victory.

Hoosiers face Rockets on Friday in NCAA Tournament

With its season on the line, the IU women’s soccer team will battle the University of Toledo on Friday in the Hoosiers’ first NCAA Tournament game since 1998. The Hoosiers travel to West Lafayette to take on the Rockets at 11 a.m. The winner of Friday’s match and the winner of the Purdue-Oakland contest will face each other Sunday. The winner of that game will travel to College Station, Texas, and continue in the tournament.

The Cardiac Kids return

The year was 1967. Already up 13-7 against Purdue, Hoosier running back Terry Cole sprinted 48 yards up the middle to give IU a commanding 19-7 lead, ultimately culminating in the program’s only Rose Bowl berth.

Hoosiers begin season with high expectations

The IU swimming and diving team experienced mixed results last season. The men garnered a fourth place conference finish and Top-20 NCAA ranking, while the women won their first Big Ten conference title since 2003. IU coach Ray Looze thinks the women’s impressive finish needs to become commonplace on both teams.

Sampson inks future of Hoosier basketball

Four recruits signed to play for IU coach Kelvin Sampson and the Hoosiers on Wednesday, National Letter of Intent Signing Day. Forwards Devin Ebanks and Tom Pritchard and guards Terrell Holloway and Matt Roth comprise Sampson’s second IU recruiting class.

Wedge wins AL Manager of the Year award

Bob Melvin and Eric Wedge barely made a ripple as players. Backup catchers, they both batted a pedestrian .233 in the big leagues. All that time spent pondering on the bench paid off. Far more successful in the dugout than on the field, they were honored Wednesday as managers of the year.

Knicks fine Stephon Marbury more than $180,000 for skipping game at Phoenix

After a summer of lawsuits and tabloid headlines, the New York Knicks wanted to get back to basketball. So much for that plan. The team fined Stephon Marbury more than $180,000 after he blew off Tuesday night’s game against Phoenix, the latest clash between the disgruntled point guard and coach Isiah Thomas.

IU hosts Hoosierland Open this week

The IU swimming and diving team will play host to the Hoosierland Open at the Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatic Center beginning today and continuing through Saturday. The competition will be fierce, and some of the nation’s top programs will be in action, including UC-Berkeley, Tennessee, Penn State and Kentucky.
