Talent drowns in musical experimentation

Like many artists today, Corey Harris has difficulties determining his true musical style. On his 1999 release, Greens from the Garden, Harris bounces all over the musical spectrum. Some parts of it are upbeat, New Orleans-style blues, while other aspects walk the beaten trail of Cajun-esque country. At times it works well -- really well.

No talent and no morals makes a bad album

So YOU wants to be rock stars. Local musicians Nick Niespodziani, Alyssa Finke, Peter Olson and Matt Sonnicksen are beat bouncing on television this week with a brand new music video. Here's the catch: most likely, only Bloomington residents will see the debut. YOU banded together to make the most of public resources by creating a music video of "Random Option," the first single from Better Live, the local act's sophomore CD release. But the video isn't headed for TRL -- these musicians will be dancing across the screens of channel 3 (41 in the residence halls), otherwise known as Bloomington's Cable Access Television Services.

Wonka DVD is a golden ticket to behind the scenes

Well, Willy Wonka was right if one of those things wanted is "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" on DVD. Not only has the movie excited audiences for 30 years, but now that the movie has been re-released with plenty of special goodies, fans of the musical hit are excited once more. Charlie Bucket is a young boy who lives in poverty with his mother and grandparents. All he wants in life is one chance to make his family's lives not so miserable, and that chance happens when Mr. Willy Wonka holds a contest for golden tickets. Five golden tickets can be found in the millions of 'Wonka' chocolate bars around the world. The finders of those tickets get a lifetime supply of chocolate and a tour of the amazing Wonka Factory, a place where, "Whoever goes in never comes out."

Feufollet romps Cajun style

'Hardball' swings, rolls foul

The tagline for Keanu Reeves' new movie "Hardball" reads: "The most important thing in life is showing up." Well the movie did show up to the movie theaters, but that's about all it did besides letting a bunch of little kids cuss. If you've seen the "Bad News Bears" or "Mighty Ducks," then you know the plot line. A troubled man is forced to coach a sports team of misfits. They terrible at first, but the kids start transforming the coach into a better person. The coach then morphs the team into a better one. Somehow they all make it to a big game, where the worst player on the team scores the winning point. Oh, and the coach finds a woman, too. "Hardball" follows this plot to almost to a T.

County council approves budget

The Monroe County Council voted Tuesday to approve the new budget for 2002, property tax adjustments and an increase in salaries for local government employees. The vote was originally on last week's agenda but officials postponed the meeting in light of the terrorist attacks Sept. 11. When Council President Joni Reagan called the meeting to order, she asked everyone to join in a moment of silence for victims of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.

Bin Laden leaves money trail

As recently as seven months ago, U.S. authorities detailed in open court an extensive network of companies and bank accounts established by Osama bin Laden and his terror group, enterprises as diverse as road construction and peanut farming. Witnesses during the trial of suspects charged in the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa identified businesses that bin Laden's al-Qaida group ran in Sudan to obtain equipment and cash and provide favors for the Sudanese government.

Volleyball defeats ISU, looks to conference play

The women's volleyball team had few problems holding its ground Tuesday against Indiana State University. The Hoosiers got a quick lead in the first game, dominating the Sycamores by as many as 10 points. After the first timeout, the Hoosiers came back to the court with a 12-5 lead. Sophomore and outside hitter Nikki Hill recorded 13 kills in three games.

Political groups plan meetings

Palestinians, Israelis agree to halt fighting

Dennison develops her game

A sophomore this year, Karen Dennison has already logged valuable playing experience on her collegiate resume for the women's golf team. Dennison played in 20 rounds, registering a 78.5 stroke average while garnering three top-25 finishes as a true freshman. Now, with the new season opening this weekend in Champaign, Ill., at the Northern Invitational, Dennison looks to begin another successful season.
