Student walks for mom, cancer

While most students are focused on getting an internship or job by the end of the semester, senior Beth Rosender has a different goal. She plans on participating in the Michigan Avon Breast Cancer Three-Day, a fundraising and breast cancer awareness event. The cancer walk, which takes place from May 31 to June 2, will take Rosender from the picturesque community of Ann Arbor to Detroit, the town that Ford built. Walking 20 miles a day, traveling a total of 60 miles in three days, Rosender and 3,000 other participants will use their journey to raise funds for breast cancer research and prevention.

Brand alleviates athletics plan concerns

The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) invited President Miles Brand to speak Feb. 17 about his ideas and plans for NCAA athletics at IU. Varsity athletes and the committee were present with their questions and concerns. Some thought Brand had intentions of reducing the level of athletics here to more of a club sport.

Constitution ratified

With elections rapidly approaching, an emergency congress of the IU Student Association scrambled Wednesday night to ratify a new constitution for the student body to vote upon. Meeting after the basketball game for about an hour, IUSA congress put the finishing touches on a constitution that will be included on the ballot as a referendum vote. A majority of the students who vote must approve the constitution for it to be enacted.

Where does all the money go?

Political- and religiously-affiliated IU student groups are being excluded by the University from obtaining Student Organizational Accounts (SOA), an action that has been deemed unconstitutional by the Synergy ticket. SOAs are monetary services provided by the University for student groups.

BLOOMINGTON -- Former U.S. Rep. Frank McCloskey has decided against entering the race for the congressional seat he held for 12 years. Some Democratic leaders had been pushing for McCloskey to challenge Rep. John Hostettler, the Republican who unseated McCloskey in 1994.

Fernandez praises community in speech

Bloomington Mayor John Fernandez received a warm welcome Thursday evening as he delivered the State of the City address. Fenandez preferred to keep the speech casual, conducting the address though a slide projection presentation and humoring the audience with numerous light remarks. The meeting, which took place at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, pertained to many city issues, including public safety.

Woman of the year named

IU Professor of Physics Catherine Olmer has been selected as Bloomington's Woman of the Year. Her contributions in the encouragement of youth -- especially females -- are among her numerous accomplishments. Olmer is one of few women in the field of physics, where only four percent of the field's members are female. Olmer has been a professor since 1979 and is currently the Executive Director of WonderLab Museum of Science, Health and Technology. WonderLab is a local hands-on science museum.

Kirkwood plan passes

The Bloomington City Council finalized and approved the plan for West Kirkwood late Wednesday night, voting 6-3 to adopt it as part the city's Growth Policies Plan. The council decided to move forward without many of the proposed amendments, which included the highly debated amendment concerning building-type codes.

China last stop for Bush

BEIJING -- President Bush failed to persuade China Thursday to halt sales of missile technology, an issue of rising importance as the United States fights its war on terrorism. Bush was ending his six-day Asian tour Friday with a visit to the Great Wall and an appeal to Chinese young people to embrace human rights and religious tolerance.

Rebels bombed

SAN VICENTE DEL CAGUAN, Colombia -- The government launched airstrikes and ordered 13,000 troops to advance on a main rebel stronghold Thursday as Colombia's 38-year-old civil war entered a potentially new and bloodier phase with the collapse of peace talks. Bombs were falling on rebel territory just hours after President Andres Pastrana -- angered by a rebel hijacking of a civilian airliner -- broke off the peace talks and condemned the rebel Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.

The fallacy of free trade

Free trade. I'm sure you've heard about it. It's the process whereby goods aren't taxed when they move from country to country. It sounds like a great idea, doesn't it? Free things are good, so free trade must be good, right? Wrong. The problem with free trade is that it isn't really free. Until and unless we live in a perfect world, free trade will hurt the economies of countries like the U.S. As I said, in a perfect world, free trade is a workable theory.

Houses need to be filled

Six greek houses sit empty across campus, either because of disciplinary action taken by IU or the national organization. These vacant houses are eyesores on campus and should be used in the interim period when a chapter is unable to occupy its house.

'Bride' a lighthearted fare for opera-goers

Rookie Week off and riding with success

The future riders of the Little 500 began their intense training yesterday, marking the start of the annual Rookie Week for all first year riders. The preparation for the rookies will last until Feb. 28, after which the track will open for all veteran riders.

Cycling club providing pre-Little 500 experience

The IU Cycling Club, or IUCC, provides its member's experience and the opportunity to ride with and against national caliber riders. The IUCC is made up of three disciplines, with their respected seasons. The club has categories for track and mountain biking in the fall and, beginning this weekend, the road season. The club has about 140 members who ride casually or compete seriously. Its largest category is the road, largely due to the production of riders who race for the Little 500.

Perfect record wins team No. 1 in Big Ten regular season

The current record of the men's club volleyball team resembles perfection. The Hoosiers returned from Iowa Saturday with a 16-0 record and the Big Ten regular season title under their belt.
