Senior contest winner reveals his dirty secrets

Last year, senior Matt Robinson cleaned his apartment the day before he heard about the Messiest College Apartment contest. He wasn't worried: Robinson knew it wouldn't take long to duplicate his mess. This year, having forgotten about the contest, Robinson saw a banner advertisement for the Apartments.com promotion.

Student trustee named

Graduate student Sacha Willsey returned from class Monday morning to find her husband at the door, waving his arms, telling her to call the Governor's office -- she had been appointed to a two-year term as IU student trustee. Willsey said she didn't expect to get the position but was hoping. She only knew she was one of 10 graduate students nominated for the student trustee position. "I am very excited," she said. "I am very grateful, and I am very honored. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity."

Clinton: Globalization can win this war

GHENT, Belgium -- Global trade can help win the war against terrorism if the West spreads the wealth it generates more equitably, former President Bill Clinton told a conference of globalization critics Tuesday. "Not everyone who's angry is angry at the civilized world and wants to destroy it," Clinton said. "A lot are angry because they can't be a part of it."

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Chances are, you didn't think this could happen. IU beat defending national champion and top-ranked Duke? No way. You were correct until less than a minute remained in Thursday night's South Regional semifinal in Rupp Arena. But, all those brackets with Duke marching straight to the Final Four took a big hit, thanks to an inspirational comeback that took the Hoosiers the entire second half to complete. It was the comeback that wouldn't quit. On a team that wouldn't fold, either.

While it's understandable that more forms of identification should be required for such an important personal document as a driver's license, the ultimate goal of the counter-terrorism action will not be achieved. Terrorists with the time, money and desire to get a license probably won't go through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) anyway. Awards recognize members

Kappa Alpha Theta, Pi Kappa Phi and Alpha Phi Alpha were recognized Thursday as IU's top greek chapters. The Interfraternity Council, the Panhellenic Association, the Multicultural Greek Council and the IU Pan-Hellenic Council came together to recognize the achievements of last year's greek community in the annual Greek Awards Ceremony at Alumni Hall in the Indiana Memorial Union.

Four wrestlers move on to Nationals

This weekend is what the Hoosier wrestling team has been working toward all season. Four wrestlers will travel to Albany, NY to participate in the NCAA Championships this Thursday. For one person, it's his last shot at the national title he covets. For another, it's his first championship. For the other two, it's their chance for redemption and to improve on last year's results.

Original 'On the Road' travels to IU

The original manuscript to beat writer Jack Kerouac's "On the Road," a 119-foot scroll detailing Kerouac's travels across America and life on the beat scene, is being evaluated for preservation at IU's Lilly Library.

Trial set for accused drug dealers

Last Tuesday at 6:52 p.m. Thomas D. Reynolds, 38, and Jennifer R. Linhart, 24, of South Bend turned themselves in to Bloomington police, Monroe County Prosecutor Jeff Kehr said. Reynolds was charged with dealing methamphetamine and conspiracy to deal methamphetamine, both of which are Class A felonies. Linhart was charged with conspiracy to deal methamphetamine, according to the Bloomington Police Department.

'Ragtime' actress sounds off

Imagine going from playing a Munchkin in a community theater production of "The Wizard of Oz" to playing Mother, one of the leads in the national touring company of "Ragtime". Emily Herring did it. "(Touring with a show) is a lot like living out of a suitcase," Herring said with a laugh. Herring grew up in Alabama and studied classical music and opera at a college in Southern Mississippi and at the University of Tennessee. "Two good southern schools," she said about them. She now lives in New York when not on the road.

Numbers are in: IU more diverse

While IU recruited and retained record numbers of minority and international students last year, the number of students from Indiana dropped off slightly, according to enrollment data. Finalized data for the entering class -- set to be released this week -- will show that the trend continues, officials said.

Hoosiers get hot in Florida weather, finish 3rd

The women's golf team's play in its first two tournaments was a lot like the Bloomington weather. Both were inconsistent. Some days it seemed like spring, and sometimes the team practiced indoors for days in a row. Likewise in their tournaments, sometimes the team shot season-low rounds and sometimes it struggled.

Sending the wrong message

Raised in the deep, dirty South, in the same town that is home to Billy Graham, I have always held my head high as a Christian. I have done so even if some might consider my denomination, Southern Baptist, a little too radical and fanatical for Christ himself. But today, with word of another ridiculous statement from Rev. Louis Sheldon, founder of the Traditional Values Coalition, I hang my head low and in disgust of the indecency of Sheldon in this time of American brotherhood.

'Blue Moon' both humorous and clever

Before I start a book, I always read the back of the bookcover first to get a deep insight and a preview of what the book will be like. I seem to judge a book by its cover and title, and the title "Blue Moon" with literally a blue moon on the cover made me wonder about it. This book was related as a modern day reminder of "Catcher in the Rye." I thought to myself that since I enjoyed "Catcher in the Rye" so much, I had high hopes that I would enjoy this book as well. I was very curious about what this book would be like.
