No forms, no dorms, Penn State tells students - some lacking meningitis shots locked out

·

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - About 300 students were denied access to their dormitories on Penn State University's main campus this week because they didn't comply with a new state law requiring meningitis vaccinations. The law, passed last summer, requires that students who live on campus be vaccinated or sign a waiver saying they understand the risks and choose not to be vaccinated.

No cure for Davis's winter time blues

·

If Mike Davis were the president of Indiana University, I have a feeling that he would be compelled to cancel winter break. That's because every year, the darndest things seem to happen to the Hoosiers while students are resting themselves for the holidays. Like Davis saying or doing something that stirs a controversy. Or IU playing flat, uninspired basketball.

Sophomore wrestler has big goals

·

On a team with only one senior, younger wrestlers need to become leaders. Pat DeGain, a sophomore from Clarkston, Mich., has done just that. "We do have a young team," said freshman Joe Dubuque, "but we want to compete and with guys like Pat, we will."

In the history of IU diving, nine Olympians have competed and teams have won six NCAA titles. This past weekend, that winning tradition continued at the Speedo American Cup. Nowadays, to call home is cool

·

Time was, parents deposited an incoming college freshman, along with stereo and other critical worldly goods, into a dorm room, and after a tearful hug or two, that was that. Henceforth, aside from a visit home at vacation time, or the regular pleas for a cash infusion, the generations were never to enjoy -- or chafe at -- the emotional intimacy that comes with living under the same roof.

Resolve to think positive

·

With the commencement of a new year, millions of hopeful saps (including myself) resolve to better their lives and quit old habits; without any doubt, the most popular resolution among them is to shed the extra pounds accumulated over the holiday-binging feasts. Even George W. admits his number one priority for 2003 is to eat fewer cheeseburgers.

John Kerry for President

·

The late Senator Paul Wellstone once wrote he never understood the arguments for politicians to move closer to the center, or act more moderate, to become elected. Maybe that was because many of Wellstone's opponents had no problems throwing out the word "liberal" and "left" like they were curse words. Yet Wellstone took it all in stride because he believed left, right and center never mattered; people just want a politics they can believe in and know that it's about them.

IU's real porn problem

·

The firestorm over the IU porno scandal rages on. One of the biggest issues of the scandal is that taxpayer money was used to support Teter Quad's transformation from a "learning community" to a sweaty brothel. Indiana citizens, notorious for their conservative views, were outraged.

War with Iraq not needed

·

It used to be that the United States was the world's police force. We protected the little people, ousted ruthless dictators and made the world safe for democracy. At least that was the facade the United States had put on, but now, our nation looks more like a big bully, pushing around governments it doesn't like and threatening to go to war without proper cause.

Author's debut unimpressive

·

Fevers of the Mind, the debut novel by Avery Z. Conner, is a detailed memoir of the author's descent into mental illness, as well as his slow and varied recovery. He painstakingly describes his life (all 30 years of it) in a verbose and self-serving story touting his own genius. While mental illness can be an extremely interesting topic, this novel degenerated from a somewhat interesting autobiography into a repetitive and boring recap of the author's mental state and medications.

Lieberman enters 2004 race

·

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Sen. Joseph Lieberman jumped into the 2004 race for president Monday, criticizing President Bush while promising to "talk straight to the American people" and show them he is "a different kind of Democrat." Lieberman, who could become the nation's first Jewish president, told students at his old high school that during the Bush campaign two years ago, "we were promised a better America, but that promise has not been kept."
