NAACP complains about shop selling Confederate clothing

EVANSVILLE -- A mall kiosk that sells Confederate-themed clothing with such statements as "The South Will Rise Again" has angered some southwestern Indiana residents and members of the NAACP. The Rev. Gerald Arnold of the Evansville chapter of the NAACP said the Confederate paraphernalia Blount Outdoors of Alabama is selling at Eastland Mall shop is offensive. "I feel the statements on these T-shirts have hidden agendas and are insensitive and very offensive," he said.

Schools face increased costs

INDIANAPOLIS -- Public schools will need at least $164 million in new money next year to sustain present programs and meet salary increase obligations for teachers and staff, according to a statewide survey by three school lobbying organizations. The survey showed that schools face at least a 3.1 percent increase in unavoidable costs because of rising enrollments, incremental increases in salaries, and rising costs for utilities and health and property insurance.

Missing Raider diagnosed

Oakland, Calif -- The agent for Barret Robbins confirmed Monday that the Oakland Raiders' All-Pro center has bipolar disorder, and that he expressed "remorse and deep sadness" for missing the Super Bowl. Robbins remains hospitalized because of his condition, agent Drew Pittman said in a statement to ESPN.

Gas line rupture forces evacuation of Bloomington buildings

A construction crew digging at the parking garage on the corner of Sixth and Morton streets ruptured a natural gas line Monday afternoon, forcing the evacuation of area businesses and the Monroe County Justice building.

Sports' forecast: gloomy

It has been tough to think negatively about sports recently. After all, the NFL playoffs have been exciting and controversial. Underdog Ohio State shocked Miami in double overtime to win the Fiesta Bowl and the national championship. Mario Lemieux has battled back from hip surgery and cancer to lead the NHL in scoring. IU has started Big Ten play, and the Indiana Pacers sit atop the NBA's Eastern Conference, led by perhaps the best two-way player in the game -- Ron Artest .

IU must plug some leaks

Collins celebrates poetry, improv performance

Oral self-expression reigned supreme this weekend at Collins Living Learning Center. The center hosted an open mic night Thursday and a poetry slam Saturday in conjunction with Arts Week -- a city-wide effort to promote diverse arts in the area. Collins is known for its open mic events, but this year proved to be different. Not only were the events open to non-residents of Collins, but it was Collins' first ever judged poetry slam.

Marion TV plant lays off 335

Marion, Ind. -- Thomson Multimedia said it will lay off 335 employees at its television tube plant here because of falling orders for the large tubes made at the sprawling factory. In addition to the layoffs that take effect on Monday, most workers will see their work week reduced from five to four days over the next 13 weeks.

Explosion kills 40 in Nigeria

LAGOS, Nigeria -- An explosion destroyed a bank and dozens of apartments above it in Nigeria's biggest city, killing at least 40 people and trapping many more in the rubble. Hundreds of young men swarmed the area in a grab for money that littered the debris.

Student code faces changes

This year, IU will change its relationship with its students. The Bloomington Faculty Council Student Affairs Committee is planning to revise the Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct, which applies to all IU students on all campuses. Though the Code informs students of their rights and could have a profound effect on their future, many have never taken the time to read its regulations, said Stephanie Reinking, deputy director of the Department of Student Rights.

'On the road' trip

"On the Road" makes its first stop in Bloomington today. An exhibit of the original manuscript for Jack Kerouac's definitive Beat novel "On the Road" begins today at the Lilly Library and will remain on display until May 10. The Lilly Library is the manuscript's first stop in a five-year, nationwide tour.

Vacant greek house to be site of shelter

The empty Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house on the corner of Third Street and Faculty Avenue was purchased Sunday by a private real-estate investor in Bloomington who plans to renovate the house into an upscale homeless shelter. Dunn Real Estate agent Dee Burris said that Bank One -- the current owner of the property -- accepted an offer from John Seeber in which he agreed to pay the asking price of $1.1 million.

Four years ago today, a Guinean immigrant named Amadou Diallo was aggressively confronted by four New York Police Department officers outside of his Bronx home. They opened fire on him. Forty-one shots later, Diallo was dead. The officers involved later said that they were looking for a serial rapist and that Diallo was "acting suspiciously." As it turns out, Diallo was not this suspect. He was an unarmed man with no criminal record.

Two brothers in California have been arrested for allegedly murdering their mother. After allegedly suffocating her, the sons chopped off her head and hands so that the body would be harder to identify -- a technique they saw on the HBO series, "The Sopranos." Undoubtedly this will stir debate

Harding, 42, resident of Bloomington, was arrested for possession of marijuana and cocaine as a result of a vehicle stop on East 10th Street east of Walnut Grove Street. • Professor Chris Saporita reported the theft of a laptop computer from the northeast corner of East 10th Street and Union Street. Estimated loss is $2,500.
