After last weekend's rain-shortened Daytona 500, journalists took advantage of their opportunity to take cheap shots at auto racing and specifically NASCAR for not completing the allotted 200 laps.

Team tuning-up for Big Ten meet

Starting this Saturday, the No. 14 men's track and field team hosts the Hoosier Hills meet as a tune-up for the conference meet, which takes place March 1 and 2 in Champaign, Ill. Teams from across the country will travel to Gladstein Fieldhouse for the meet, which starts at noon. As the team will work to beat the competition, the focus will be on the Big Ten Championship.

Hoosiers try to end losing skid

The No. 52 IU women's tennis team (5-5 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) looks to rebound from a three game skid when it takes on the No. 12 ranked Tennessee Volunteers (6-2) at 7 a.m. this Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn.

The men's tennis team will look to add to a season- opening eight game winning streak this weekend when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., to battle Vanderbilt. The Hoosiers are trying to keep their confidence up before they walk onto the court to play against a team ranked No. 28.

The IU hockey team will get only two games to erase last weekend's Great Midwest Hockey League tournament semifinal loss before it goes to the American Collegiate Hockey Association finals next weekend.

Team to play Florida tourney

Coming off a strong 3-2 tournament, including an 8-3 victory over San Jose State, the Hoosier softball team faces a five game weekend in Tampa, Fla. The South Florida Tournament pits IU against Maryland and Hofstra Friday and then Seton Hall and the hosting South Florida Bulls Saturday.

LeBron James will, most likely, be the first pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. Two other players have an outside shot of meeting David Stern before the Ohio high school phenom: Syracuse forward Carmelo Anthony and Darko Milicic, a seven footer out of Yugoslavia.

IU in first after two days

The IU women's swimming and diving team finished the first day at the Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships in a fourth place tie, but within eight points of co-leaders Wisconsin and Penn State.

Turkey may accept proposal

WASHINGTON -- Secretary of State Colin Powell said Thursday "there may be some creative things we can do" to gain acceptance of a proposed U.S. aid package meant to pave the way for Turkey to help in a war against Iraq. During a State Department news conference with NATO Secretary Lord Robertson, Powell did not elaborate on those refinements but said he expected to hear from Turkey by day's end. As for the United States, "Our position is firm," Powell said.

The Neal-Marshall Education Center will hold its annual Neal-Marshall Lecture in Public Policy at 2 p.m. today in the building's Grand Hall. The topic for the lecture will be this year's legislative agenda for the Indiana Black Caucus.

Road rally formed to give students active role

This Saturday the Extreme Road Rally is rolling into town, and it isn't the first time. For three years now an organization run through the School of Public and Environmental Affairs called "Students Taking Active Roles Today" has organized this event as a way to get people, mostly students, to see what volunteer opportunities are available in the local area.
