A 'grand' weekend for IU coach

After a home loss and a postponed game on Friday, IU baseball coach Bob Morgan finally snatched his elusive 1,000th career victory this weekend becoming the 12th active coach and just the 26th in Division I history to reach the 1,000 win plateau.

Helping to give a dog a home

His real name is Kairoo, but to graduate student Jessie Mallor he looks more like a Louie. His light brown, fuzzy hair makes the playful puppy look like a teddy bear, Mallor said, as she pets the three-month-old shepherd mix. "He's like a mobster that goes home to his mom," she said. But Kairoo doesn't have a home.

SOUTH BEND -- When Pam Brunette was looking for ways to help America after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, she happened across the AdoptaPlatoon Web site devoted to providing support for troops overseas. Few have probably taken its message to heart as deeply as the South Bend woman. Not only did she sign up to be a surrogate "mom" for several individual military members, she went on to adopt several platoons and, recently, an entire Marine company.

'Streetcar' a classic

INDIANAPOLIS -- Strict new federal air quality standards that go into effect next year could leave industries in more than 30 Indiana counties facing tightened development restrictions. Presently, only northwestern Indiana's Lake and Porter counties exceed the old standard requiring readings of ground-level ozone, or smog, to stay below 0.120 parts per million in a one-hour period.
