Prof. knows how to get her cheer on

LAFAYETTE -- Shorna Broussard is an assistant professor at Purdue University. She also is a rookie cheerleader with the Indianapolis Colts. "Being from Texas, you grow up loving football," she said with a laugh. "It is part of the culture." Last spring, Broussard began the audition process with almost 300 other women. She survived several cuts to earn one of the 35 roster spots.

City parking fines to rise

Parking fines will be increasing in price around Bloomington to help pay for more parking. Last Wednesday, the Bloomington city council decided to raise the price of common parking tickets, a decision that will become official this Wednesday. "We decided to raise the ticket prices and next Wednesday, we will officially sanction it at our council meeting," councilman Anthony Pizzo said.

Rash of indecent exposures occur on IU campus

Several episodes of indecent exposure incidents have afflicted the IU campus lately. At least six people have made reports to the IU Police Department since late June of having been the victim of a "flasher." IUPD Detective Greg McClure said he believes four of the six incidents were committed by the same man.

Hussein kept weapons removal quiet, aide says

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- A close aide to Saddam Hussein says the Iraqi dictator did in fact get rid of his weapons of mass destruction, but deliberately kept the world guessing about it in an effort to divide the international community and stave off a U.S. invasion. The strategy, which turned out to be a serious miscalculation, was designed to make the Iraqi dictator look strong in the eyes of the Arab world, while countries such as France and Russia were wary of joining an American-led attack. At the same time, Saddam retained the technical know-how and brain power to restart the programs at any time.

God must be beaming. I know I am. And not just because someone technically is offering me money for sitting in a pew. A black Baptist minister wanting to diversify his congregation is offering to pay white folk to attend his services. The going price for a honky is $5 an hour on Sundays and $10 an hour on Thursdays. I've never been paid $10 an hour for anything in my life, much less for attending a predominantly black church.

A mammoth mistake

Scientific cloning is always a hotbed of debate. There seems to be some new reason to clone something or someone all the time, but now there seems the possibility of cloning the dead. Sounds like a horror movie, but scientists in Japan hope to recreate a wooly mammoth from bone marrow, muscle and skin that was discovered in the Siberian tundra, The Associated Press reported earlier last month.

Sharing responsibility

Imbalances in state budgets have forced tuition hikes, which, coupled with cutbacks in financial aid, result in a greater financial burden for students, many of whom rely on college aid to finance their education. The lagging American economy not withstanding, educational cutbacks are the worst thing the government can do as far as long-term planning for the country's future.

The Kraftwerk single and its latest album's title track, "Tour de France 03," is a Tour de Fun. The song follows in the tradition of Kraftwerk's minimal beat style, however it has been updated to fit with the times. Kraftwerk seems to have been influenced by current trends in electronic music, even though it helped pioneer the genre in the early '70s.

The subversive little world of 'Spy Kids'

Kevin Spacey is a great actor who has made his mark in many great movies such as "The Usual Suspects," "Seven," "L.A. Confidential" and "American Beauty" to name a few. In fact, he's carved out such a niche for himself that by simply being in a movie it will have a twist ending. "The Life of David Gale" is no exception, as Spacey plays the titular character, a man sentenced to be executed, who may or may not be guilty of murder.
