Fashion looks to spring

·

NEW YORK -- This year marks the 10th anniversary of 7th on Sixth, an organization originally formed in 1993 by the Council of Fashion Designers of America to organize, centralize and modernize the New York collections. It has become one of the city's marquee events, attracting thousands. Fashion industry leaders, the worldwide press, buyers, celebrities and politicians make up the mix, and it generates an estimated $253 million for the city's economy each year. This year, 66 designers will present their spring collections from Sept. 12 to 17, and many are making their debut under the tents at Bryant Park. Collections like BodyGear Activewear and Bahar Korcan are showing their creations for the first time at this year's Fashion Week. The popularity of the event has created so much hype that hundreds of people are being denied entrance to many of the most talked-about shows. Baby Phat, Rosa Cha by Amir Slama and Fusha lines were so long their shows were standing room only. In February, the less-than-booming economy didn't add to the already downtrodden mood surrounding the shows. But this season, things are different. A-list celebrities are dominating the red carpet, and designers are supporting others designers by attending shows.

8 game losing streak halted

·

It took the rekindling of a 78-year old rivalry to end an eight-game losing streak. The Hoosier football team defeated regional foe Indiana State 33-3 to give IU its first win of the year in its home opener. The team rallied behind a strong running game, a steady defense and big plays on special teams to answer a pair of blowout losses with a blowout win of its own. Despite the earlier losses at UConn and Washington to open the year, coach Gerry DiNardo downplayed the importance of needing this win over any others.

Straight outta Compton

In the late eighties and early nineties, Compton, a community of nearly two million people in Los Angeles County, California, had a bad reputation. Brave new economy

·

I cannot adequately express how ecstatic I am about today's economy. The prospect of spending months unemployed while sending out resumes and conducting interviews thrills me to no end. Maybe I will get a job right after I graduate. But actually I hope I don't, because engaging in job-hunting activities is simply so much fun. Think of the risks involved! Think of the excitement! The way I see it, job-seeking is destined to become the next big extreme sport.

Trustees remember IU connection, friendships with governor

The flag at Memorial Stadium rested lifeless against its pole at half-mast Saturday. The nearly 30,000 in attendance for the IU football game stood, but it wasn't to cheer a spectacular play. The moment of silence was IU's first of many tributes to alumnus and Indiana's 47th governor, Frank O'Bannon.
