Bus me, don't bust me

This is CNN?

·

A modest summary of 2004 primary coverage. Wolf Blitzer: And welcome back to CNN for our very special America Votes 2004 primary election night. Stay tuned all night -- literally, all night -- for CNN's election coverage. We'll have rambling commentaries, outlandish suggestions and interviews with candidates who think fourth place is a "strong comeback." Plus, we'll use harsh electric currents to keep Larry King awake. But now, I am joined by senior political analysts Judy Woodruff and Jeff Greenfield -- actual warm bodies I can talk to, instead of a cold camera lens ... No offense to my camera operator.

A lament on maturity

·

This past week, I spent a good amount of time making phone calls to publishing houses, filling out internship applications and mentally preparing myself for the possibility of living in New York for the summer. Such efficiency! So responsible! When I called my parents and told them how the search was going, my dad brought up the family's vacation plans --"Yeah, we're going to be renting that beach house in Ocean City from July 31 through ... "

Point of Protest

·

In the 1960s, Dunn Meadow stood for more than just a Frisbee-friendly field or the venue for the occasional concert. Former students like John Irvine remember when Dunn Meadow was the hot bed for daily demonstrations. "I remember demonstrations where you couldn't even step into the meadow," said Irvine, who is now the director of student legal services. "The density of the crowd was so packed, and they would stretch from Indiana Avenue to even the corner of the Union.

The need to heat up

·

Last week at this time, the Hoosiers found themselves in a great position in the Big Ten. They were tied at the top of the standings at 5-1 and had six of their last 10 games at home. But IU has dropped two-straight games, one at Michigan State and the home contest Tuesday against Illinois. Now the Hoosiers need a win against Iowa Saturday to stay alive in the Big Ten race. "We still believe we can win," sophomore guard Marshall Strickland said. "We think it's going to be tough for anybody to come in here and win against us. We're going into this game with a lot of confidence."

Historic opera debuts

·

Most operas have plots that seem larger than life -- more comedic or more tragic than reality could ever be. With the IU Opera Theater's newest production, the drama may be larger than life, but it is grounded in a true story. "The Ballad of Baby Doe" by American composer Douglas Moore premiered in 1956 in Central City, Colo., near where the story actually took place.

Texas plan, UMich case highlight debate on diversity policies

·

As litigation proliferates across the country concerning affirmative action in college admissions, University officials say IU will maintain its commitment to recruiting and retaining a diverse student body. IU Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Services Don Hossler said while the Bloomington campus does not have a specific policy mandating affirmative action-based admissions, administrators and officials within the Office of Admissions feel much can be gained by attracting a diverse cross-section of students.

Commitment to diversity remains a top priority for IU

·

A seed was planted on October 13, 1992. In hopes of making IU a more productive learning environment, the IU board of trustees adopted the Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Policy. While it may not be obvious, statistics from the 2003 Report on the Status of Minorities at IU show change has occurred. IU President Adam Herbert gave the trustees a copy of the report at the board's last meeting.

Today will mark the beginning of the fourth-annual Eagle Watch Weekend held at the Fourwinds Resort and Marina. This is the Fourwind's third year hosting this event, and Jeff Hammond, the manager of the resort, said the proximity to Lake Monroe almost guarantees a bald eagle sighting.

Penn State dominates IU

·

Led by senior guard Kelly Mazzante's 24 points, No. 5 Penn State (18-3, 10-0 Big Ten) pulled away in the second half for a 66-49 win over IU (10-11, 3-7 Big Ten). Mazzante missed only one shot in the second half as the Lady Lions continued their best-ever start in Big Ten play. Tenacious defense and the free throw shooting of junior forward Jenny DeMuth kept the Hoosiers within four of Penn State at halftime. DeMuth was a perfect eight for eight from the charity stripe in the first half, and Mazzante, the Big Ten's all-time leading scorer, was held to seven points.
