Delaying tactic

·

Students: Got a problem with the University? Don’t worry – given enough time, the problem will go away. No, it won’t be solved. But after a few years, you’ll graduate and won’t be around to complain about it. So no more problem, right? Right.

Rodeo clowns are animals

Animals pay a heavy price to satisfy people’s desire to play cowboy (“Rodeo gives fairgoers thrills,” July 30). Animals used in rodeo are subjected to abusive conditions in order to guarantee they’ll perform as expected by the paying public.

A new school year

·

I’ve always enjoyed the start of a new school year at IU. The inhabitants of Bloomington have had a few months without the massive student population being in residence, and everyone is looking forward to their return.

Iraq’s democracy depends on Iraqis

·

I read a report about corruption in the Iraq government. Everyone seems so surprised and upset about it. I don’t understand that attitude. When the Bush regime set up its puppet government in Iraq, did they really expect a storybook democracy?

War critics are hypocrites

My eye was drawn to two letters by their violent titles “Soldiers are murderers” (Steve Salter, July 19) and “Either all lives are sacred, or none” (Aaron Spector, July 19), and I was greatly disturbed by what I read there. War aside, because as Gen. Robert E. Lee said, “It is well that war is so terrible – lest we should grow too fond of it.”

Mother Church slow to react, but not absent

Growing up, my strong-willed Australian father would always comment, “Anti-Catholicism is the longest standing prejudice in history. It almost always goes unquestioned and overlooked.” As a young girl, I never paid much attention because frankly I did not know enough about my faith to care.

Indiana GOP misrepresents plan for troop withdrawal

Robert Vane’s column (“President of the United States: Commander in Chief,” July 26) attacking Rep. Baron Hill’s stance on the Iraq war is unhelpful. After four years of a clearly failing and mismanaging the Iraq strategy, we need to be looking for a different approach to ending our engagement in this war.

Delivering justice where it’s needed

In response to the July 19 letters “Soldiers are murderers” (Steve Salter) and “Either all lives are sacred, or none” (Aaron Spector), I would like to clear up the distortions of my original July 5 letter (“Soldiers not terrorists”).

Music critics are guides, not prophets

As an IU student, music aficionado and yes, Pitchfork writer, I’d like to take issue with the lack of agency that Anna Piontek assumes of Pitchfork readers (“Pitchfork Debacle,” July 26). The idea that they “walk into local record stores like zombies,” while no doubt a bit facetious, also calls into question their integrity.

Spectacular Science

In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick changed the face of biology by discovering the double helical structure of the DNA molecule. Both scientists went on to win the Nobel Prize for their work. It is less well-known that only three years prior to this discovery, Watson received his Ph.D. from IU.

Grammar grumbling

·

Not a week goes by that I don’t notice one of my Facebook friends crawling across my News Feed, informing me they’ve joined either a group declaring the superiority of good grammar or a group that wants the Grammar Nazis to shut up.

Disinherit this

·

Those blessed two weeks before fall classes are almost here, just in time for a final summer road trip or a stint in rehab. In case I don’t return from my own adventures on the eastern seaboard (will whatever’s in New Jersey kill me?), it’s my duty to pump you full of totally defensible libel like a doctor pumping a B-list actress full of collagen.

Smoggy statutes

We may be beating a dead, rotting, methane-releasing horse with a thick lead pipe, but if it’s worth saying once, it’s worth repeating until we turn blue in the face: The Indiana legislature is failing miserably in its attempt to curb atmospheric pollution, combat global warming and protect the state’s precious wildlife.

Last car running wins

Imagine bumper cars. Bumper cars plus dirt and revving engines. The Monroe County Fair’s Demolition Derby began with a bang in front of a sold-out crowd Saturday night. Bulldozers lined the Grandstand arena at the Monroe County Fairgrounds as volunteers watered the dirt for the upcoming demolition derby.  VIDEO: Monroe County Fair highlights

Pimp my Po-Po

·

There’s been an awful lot of hullabaloo recently concerning IUPD’s decision to upgrade its fleet from the traditional Ford Crown Victorias to sporty, needlessly aggressive-looking, pathetically overhyped Dodge Chargers.
