Ladies First present year-end show

Tonight, IU's premier women's a cappella group, Ladies First, will perform for the last time this year with all of its members. For those who are unfamiliar with the group, Ladies First began three years ago, when Natalie Perkins and Sarah Gibson founded the group in the fall of 1999 with the assistance of Walter Shilanskas, director emeritus of Straight No Chaser. The group of 10 women gained sponsorship from the IU Alumni Association in spring of 1999.

Flying family defies gravity

Reports say state not ready for possible terror attack

INDIANAPOLIS --Despite several years of preparation, Indiana doesn't have enough trained people or specialized equipment to cope with a large terrorist attack, according to studies for the State Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Justice Department. One study looked at potential terrorist targets and the readiness of local agencies. The other outlined a three-year strategy for beefing up the state's resources.

Man dies after jumping from apartment building

A Boston native visiting Bloomington died Saturday afternoon after jumping off a two-story apartment building early Friday morning. John Wilfred Howard Simard, 21, died from resulting injuries at Bloomington Hospital at 2:15 p.m. Saturday.

Hoosiers do not go winless in Big Ten

With the last two regular season matches looming, the IU men's tennis team did not want to become the first IU men's tennis team to go winless in Big Ten action. Only one time since 1963 has the team finished with only one conference victory, that coming in 1982. Last year, IU won five conference matches.

Freshman's game leads team in Ohio

For the second straight week, IU played a tournament in Ohio and finished tied for sixth. And for the second straight week, freshman Jeff Overton posted a new career best in the final round of play.

Hoosiers finish in fourth place

Rain shortened the IU women's golf team's final tournament before the Big Ten championships and finalized a fourth place finish the team forged during the first two rounds. The ten-team field competed at the famous Par-72, 6,037-yard Ohio State University Scarlet Golf Course.

Hoosiers do well despite poor weather

The men and women's track and field teams were unable to escape the weather this weekend as their meet, held on Illinois' campus, was cut short by lightning. The meet, which was Friday afternoon, was moved up a half hour in an attempt to get the meet finished before the bad weather moved in.

Minnesota shuts out Hoosier hitters

Minnesota's strong pitching tandem of Piper Marten and Angie Recknor shut down the IU offense in the Hoosiers' trip to Minneapolis for a pair of games over the weekend. Marten and Recknor each pitched shutouts while limiting the IU hitters to just seven hits in 12 innings of play. The Hoosiers were also scheduled to play Wisconsin in a doubleheader Sunday, but the games were canceled because of inclement weather.

Elkhart monument ruled unconstitutional

ELKHART, Ind. -- A judge who approved a plan to erect monuments to other important documents near a Ten Commandments marker so it could remain on city property has reversed that decision, ruling that the proposal is unconstitutional.

Cardinal addresses crisis

BOSTON -- The Vatican needs to understand that the clergy sexual abuse scandal in America is "a very serious issue undermining the mission of the church," Cardinal Bernard Law told parishioners Sunday as he and the nation's other cardinals prepared for a rare meeting this week at the Vatican.

Wilco goes for new sound

Soul Revue's concert moves, amazes

The Buskirk-Chumley Theatre was alive with excitement Saturday when the IU Soul Revue took the stage for its annual spring concert. The event was a special one, as the Revue celebrated its 30th anniversary. The house was packed, the atmosphere was jovial and there was a buzz of anticipation as people found their seats.

When the Bush Administration back-pedaled on protecting the last remaining wild areas in America's national forests, many of us in the scientific community took notice. For much of the past century, the Forest Service, entrusted as the institutional steward of our national forests, focused its management on an industrial-scale logging program. The result of the massive logging and road construction program was to damage watersheds, destroy wildlife habitat and imperil plant and animal species.
