Commission moves forward with growth plan

The Bloomington Plan Commission approved the fourth draft of the Growth Policies Plan on Monday evening, sending the plan to the Bloomington City Council for final approval. The plan is a comprehensive idea for the growth and development of Bloomington. It serves as a guide for all major growth in the city, and highlights areas which require special attention when considering growth.

Miami takes down IU

A final-second save by Miami of Ohio senior goalkeeper Marie Vaughn gave the Redhawks a 2-1 victory against the Hoosiers in the season opener Sunday at Mellencamp Pavilion. In front of a crowd of 136, the largest crowd in the program's history, the second-year Hoosier program improved on a 9-0 loss last year against the Redhawks.

On lap 93 of the 100-lap race, Kappa Alpha Theta senior took the exchange, hopped on her Mongoose bike and built a quarter of a lap lead on the four teams that remained on the lead lap, Roadrunners, Kappa Delta and Alpha Gamma Delta. With a quarter of a lap remaining in the race, Johnson could not make up the half a straightaway lead that Roadrunner senior Jenn Wangerin had built in the final lap to win the 14th running of the women's Little 500. "I just don't believe it's over," Wangerin said. "It really came together for us."

Coverdale's injury inspires late run

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- When junior Tom Coverdale stepped on Kent State's Eric Thomas' foot and crumbled to the floor, there was 9:35 left in Saturday night's game against the Golden Flashes. The Hoosiers had just put the finishing touches on a 19-9 run and had built a 59-41 lead.

Trio gives exciting performance

Standing ovations from a nearly full house at the Musical Arts Center greeted the Beaux Arts Trio Tuesday night. Menahem Pressler, pianist, Daniel Hope, violinist, and Antonio Meneses, cellist, bowed with pride after completing a commanding and exciting performance.

Buskirk-Chumley concert canceled; College Mall closed

The performance by the Joshua Redman Quartet, scheduled for Tuesday night at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave., has been canceled. Representatives from Jazz From Bloomington, the organization sponsoring the event, will be at the Buskirk-Chumley starting at 6 p.m. tonight offering refunds to ticket holders. Jazz From Bloomington may attempt to reschedule the concert for a later date, although David Miller, speaking for the organization, was not optimistic.

Former IU student at trial

Fairfield, Ill. -- The number 13 is playing a recurring part in testimony in the trial of a mother charged with stabbing her 10-year-old son to death. A forensic pathologist told the jury hearing Julie Rea's murder trial on Monday that Joel Kirkpatrick had suffered 13 stab wounds when he was found dead in his mother's home Oct. 13, 1997.

I woke up at 10 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001. Within minutes, my life would change forever. During numerous conversations the preceding week, my father had mentioned how excited he was for his two-day business trip to New York, during which he would be working in the infamous World Trade Center. I anticipated that he would tell my family about his experience, after flying home, on the night of that fated Tuesday. But he did not fly home that night. Seconds after turning on CNN and watching the planes fly into the towers, I lost control of myself.

Teams cite determination as key to victory

The middle of the pack for the women's Little 500 could contain this year's champion if track conditions improve and luck is on someone's side. Even though Alpha Omicron Pi, Con Fuoco and Alpha Phi have not been powerhouses recently, these teams say not to be surprised if determination drives them past the favorites.

Revitalization process heads to West Kirkwood

The Bloomington mayor's office has plans to continue the revitalization of West Kirkwood Ave. in 2003. Mayor John Fernandez unveiled a plan Jan. 14 to designate the area of West Kirkwood between Rogers and Adams Streets as an Economic Revitalization area.

Draft shows NBA changing

Many anxious eyes were on their TVs Wednesday night, and not just to see the fate of Hoosier hero Kirk Haston and his future destination. The NBA draft was happening, and in the days leading up to and after the draft, one thing is obvious -- the NBA sure is changing.

Team beats Ohio State, loses 2nd game to Penn State

The IU women's soccer team split two games in their first home games this weekend. On Friday night the team beat Ohio State 2-1 at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The victory propelled IU to its best start in school history, at 5-1-1, and surpassed its conference win total from last season in the year's third conference game.

Murder suspect turns gun on self

What began Tuesday night as an arson case ended Friday with the suicide of a murder suspect on the run. Police responded around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday to a fire at 1600 N. Willis Drive, Lot 171, in the Arlington Valley Mobile Home Park. Dental records later identified the woman found dead inside as Linda Darlene Eshbach, 56, said Sgt. Rick Helms of the Bloomington Police Department.
