Volunteers bring joy to local nursing homes

Easter arrived early to Hospitality House, 1100 S. Curry Pike, and other local nursing homes Sunday. Salvation Army volunteers visited five area nursing homes to distribute more than 500 stuffed bunnies to individuals residents. Nursing home residents were peppered throughout the corridors with walls of pastel blue and pink laced with large-petaled flowers awaiting the arrival of Salvation Army volunteers.

Team competes in final series

The IU baseball team is looking to win its first weekend series in the final series of the 2001 season at Illinois. The baseball team is finishing the year at seventh-place Illinois for a four-game set, bringing an end to a season coach Bob Morgan described as unsuccessful. "It's been a long and frustrating season," Morgan said in a press release. "We just look to finish on a positive note and play as well as we possibly can."

The search continues for missing ISU student

The search for Scott Javins will get a financial boost this weekend as family and friends will hold a series of car wash fundraisers around Terre Haute to raise money. Javins, 20, of Terre Haute, left a friend's house at about 2 a.m. nearly two weeks ago, in the early morning hours of May 24. The Indiana State University student talked to his mother on his cellular phone to tell her he was on the way home.

An Internet company sued last week to be allowed to broadcast Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh's execution on the Internet. McVeigh is set to be executed May 16 in a Terre Haute penitentiary for the 1995, bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City, Okla. That blast killed 168 people.

Theater's owner can decide its fate

Kerasotes has put the old Von Lee theater, 517 Kirkwood Ave., up for sale. There is a "no movie theater" clause in the contract, meaning the purchaser may not use the building as a movie theater. The Kerasotes family purchased the theatre in 1976 from the Vonderschmidt family. Kerasotes owns both Showplace theatres in Bloomington. Because they own what was formerly the Von Lee, it is ultimately their decision on what to do with the building.

During the 2000-2001 men's basketball season, then-interim head coach Mike Davis was under the pressure to perform to the level expected from Hoosier basketball fans to maintain his job past his inaugural season. He did just that, finishing third in the Big Ten regular season, runner-up in the conference tournament and earned a number four seed in the NCAA tournament. Davis performed under pressure from his employers, fans and the media. But imagine the pressure felt from being at the helm of every sport at IU. Women's Frisbee heads to Nationals

The IU women's ultimate Frisbee club team, also known as "Calamity Jane," heads to Spokane, Wash. this weekend to compete against other top-16 ultimate teams in the country in the National Tournament. Calamity Jane earned its berth to the National Tournament by edging out 16 other teams to become the 2002 Great Lakes Regional Champions. The Calamity Jane team finished fourth in Regionals and beat the top-three seeds to earn its spot as one of the 16 at the National Tournament.

Perfect performance in weekend tourney

The IU softball team defeated all three of its opponents in the Indiana Invitational this weekend to give it four straight wins and move its record for the year to 9-10-1.
