Over The Rhine comes to Buskirk-Chumley on Friday

·

Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist, the musicians of the Ohio duo Over The Rhine, are no strangers to Bloomington. They’ve performed and recorded here in the past, and they’re back to perform Friday at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. The couple will also be celebrating their 11th wedding anniversary in Bloomington that day.

The best show you’re not watching

·

All that matters in television is ratings. There are shows that don’t get a fair shake from their networks because they lack the ability to draw in a certain demographic. They’re usually cancelled when they “underperform,” or worse, dumped into an awful time slot that all but guarantees the shows a slow, painful death. A show currently in this situation is “Friday Night Lights.”

Oil apocalypse and make-believe

·

Not long ago, someone on the street handed me another flier warning me about the impending oil crash. To some IU students, this seems to be a major fear. They seem to think that one day the supply of oil will simply disappear and society will be left at a standstill.

The good fight

·

Two weeks ago the United Nations General Assembly brought many of the world’s leaders to New York, but the only one anyone really talked about was Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The president of Iran’s visit to Columbia University sparked intense debate, but I suspect Ahmadinejad’s visit was largely irrelevant.

Elite idealists

·

Unless there is a radical change in strategy from Democrats, they should, and certainly will, lose the 2008 presidential election. The reason being is that the supposed “party of the people” is unable to package a candidate that exemplifies what the people really want. I urge you to look at the two frontrunners on the Democratic side before you reject this hypothesis.

Bordering on insanity

Immigration is perhaps the United States’ greatest strength, and has been an important part of our history. Immigration has also been an especially significant asset to our university system. Large numbers of foreign professors and students bring both academic, cultural and economic assets to our country, contributing billions of dollars every year to the U.S.

“From there to here, and here to there, funny things are everywhere.” This includes the IU Department of Theatre and Drama’s “Seussical the Musical,” which will open at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Ruth N. Halls Theatre. Based on the stories of Dr.

Painting the way

·

The leaves had not even begun to change color when IU President William Lowe Bryan proposed to University trustees in June 1922 that his longtime friend, the lauded painter Theodore Clement Steele, be offered a position at the University. Steele was Indiana’s preeminent artist.

Circle City Arts

·

With its famous circle in the heart of downtown and surrounded by the circular highway I-465, Indianapolis is affectionately referred to as the Circle City. Indiana’s capital is not only home to the Super Bowl XLI champion Colts, but it also is filled with opportunities to experience the arts. From Chihuly glass sculptures hanging in the Children’s Museum to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s “Symphony on the Prairie,” the choices are endless for a trip – or a few trips – away from Bloomington.

What is Art?

·

What is it about the term “performance art” that makes us all shudder? Perhaps it’s the “artists” who do things such as cut their wrists open in front of an audience.
