US soldiers banned from patrols

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippine government Monday prohibited U.S. troops from joining soldiers on combat patrols during counterterrorism exercises planned for later this year on Jolo, a southern island where Muslim militants are active. The ban marks a change from last year, when American soldiers joined Filipino army units on combat patrols during similar exercises on nearby Basilan island.

Team has strong showing out west

This weekend only the distance runners and sophomore All-American triple jumper Aarik Wilson competed at the Mt. Sac Relays at Mt. San Antonio College in California. The Jefferson twins, sophomore John and redshirt freshman Sean, won their events with impressive times to lead the team to a successful finish at the meet.

BEIJING -- Jolted by a jump in SARS deaths and a tenfold increase in infections in Beijing alone, China's Communist Party stripped the health minister and the capital's mayor of power Sunday.

IU programs recognized

IU's international programs received global recognition in a report released Wednesday. The National Association of Foreign Student Affairs chose IU as one of six universities to profile for outstanding "campus internationalization."

Weekend split keeps IU on pace

The third place IU baseball team kept pace with second place Ohio State this weekend by earning a series split on the road in Columbus, Ohio. IU (25-11, 9-7 Big Ten) dropped the first two games of the series but rebounded with two wins in games three and four to salvage a split from the Buckeyes (22-12, 10-6).

The IU men's tennis team left its home court for the last time of the season Saturday. But, unfortunately for the team, it was after its seventh straight loss.

Hoosiers gain confidence despite poor showing

The Hoosiers traveled north to East Lansing, Mich., this weekend to take on Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State. In most of the races, the Hoosiers raced against Michigan in the morning and Michigan State in the afternoon. The novice four however competed against Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State in the second varsity four race.

Team places third at Buckeye Invite

This weekend the IU women's golf team traveled to Columbus, Ohio, to participate in the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational.

Weekend leaves IU winless in Big Ten play

In game one against the No. 24 Hawkeyes Sunday, IU only stranded one runner on base. The problem is, the Hoosiers only put one runner on base as Iowa sophomore Lisa Birocci pitched a no hitter, walking one batter before the mercy rule went into effect after six innings with Iowa on top 8-0. Birocci baffled IU hitters all day long in the midst of her first career no-hitter, improving her record to a jaw-dropping 18-6. She struck out five of the first six batters and retired the first 14 she faced, but gave up a two-out walk to senior Katie Joy in the top of the fifth.

Loss ends regular season for IU

The Hoosiers (9-16, 1-9 Big Ten) closed out their regular season with a disappointing weekend. The women's tennis team, who has lost three straight matches, dropped another two this weekend to Big Ten rivals Illinois and Purdue.

Fan behavior is no longer humorous

Admit it. You've occasionally gotten a laugh out of someone running onto a field during a sporting event. Whether they are clothed or not, we all get a chuckle from these morons. Nike recognized this with its hilarious streaker ad this past winter in which a naked Brit runs onto a soccer pitch and the stewards cannot catch him (due to his flashy new Nike sneakers).

Women fair well at Mt. Sac Relays A few members of the IU women's track and field team went to California this past weekend and had a successful trip. Senior Rachelle Boone reached the qualifying mark for regionals in the 200 meter with a time of 23.36 seconds.

CHICAGO -- The man who ran onto the field during a White Sox-Kansas City Royals game last week and allegedly attacked an umpire says he never intended to hurt anybody.
