What's in a name?

·

Aww, how's Osama?" I asked, leaning back into a comfy cushion in the living room. A hush fell over the room as everyone's eyes turned toward me in confusion. As an awkward silence filled the air, I realized I should have known. Some names are simply taboo.

Von Lee 'alcohol' meeting approaches

·

The Monroe County Alcoholic Beverage Board will decide the fate of the Von Lee Theater at a hearing Wednesday morning. Property owner Artemis LLC intends to refurbish the former movie house as an upscale bar and restaurant, but it needs a liquor license to do so. The Save the Von Lee committee, headed by Chris Sturbaum, will attempt to convince the board to deny the license.

Jordan River Forum

·

Adam Shackelford's Jan. 27 letter to the editor, "Free trade propagates Cambodia conditions," does very little to explain current conditions in Cambodia. While Shackelford makes important arguments (with which I am sympathetic) about morally repugnant sweatshop conditions in the third world and the conditions that lead to them, he naively assumes that all of Cambodia's ills can be traced to the free trade policies that propagate sweatshops.

Hoosiers confident for Illini challenge

·

The Hoosiers said the loss they suffered at Michigan State Saturday was hardly a blow to their confidence in this year's Big Ten season. With the Hoosiers sitting in the No. 2 spot in the conference, sophomore forward Sean Kline said the team is still focused on the same thing. "We're fighting for our lives to make the tournament and to win a Big Ten championship," Kline said. The next step toward a Big Ten championship will be a home victory over Illinois (13-5, 4-3 Big Ten) tonight at 7 p.m. It will be the first of two home games in a row for IU (11-7, 5-2). IU has won nine of the last 12 meetings with Illinois in Bloomington, with the last loss to the Illini at IU in 2001. The Hoosiers' leading scorer is still sophomore guard Bracey Wright, who is averaging 20.4 points per game and scored a team-high 29 points in Saturday's loss to MSU.

Hail to the Master Chief

·

Mom always said video games would rot your brain, and once you brought home a bad report card, she took them away for a while.

Who are you, anyway?

·

I am a "non-traditional" student. After a stretch of trade school, working and a few semesters at an IU extension campus, I came to Bloomington knowing myself and what I wanted to get out of the experience.

Computer conundrum

·

Imagine waking up in the morning to find out from the Web that classes were canceled due to snow -- or even worse because of a terrorist attack. This is exactly the kind of problems with which IU must deal but is sadly choosing to ignore.

While former IU third baseman Vasili Spanos may not always look or act the part, his career numbers prove that he's worthy of playing professionally. He may get another chance to play at the amateur level.

Kelley school teams with Scotts Co.

·

Students in the MBA program at IU's Kelley School of Business now have a chance to take part in a program which will allow them to gain not only class credit but real business world experience as well. The business school teamed with Bloomington Brands, LLC, created by Robert Stohler, an IU alumnus and former employee of Scotts, the company known for such products as Miracle Gro. While the company is widely known for its miracle plant growth enhancer, it also manufactures other home and garden products with less recognition across the nation.

·

Inspiration can come from almost anywhere. Students in the interior design program learned their personalities greatly affected their designs when recently completing projects for a statewide competition. The contest was put on by the International Interior Design Association. Seniors participating in the interior design project created 26 chairs as part of a class required for their major. It is mandatory for seniors in Cynthia Landis' senior studio H476 Interior Design VI to enter the annual competition.

SwissAir, here I come!

·

Two checked bags. Wow, SwissAir has got to be kidding on this one. I am packing up to live in Europe for six months, and SwissAir thinks I can do it with only two checked bags? Funny.
