Some Monroe County residents who lost power when the remnants of Hurricane Ike swept through the area this weekend could be without electricity until Saturday. Duke Energy officials blamed the delay on the number of customers effected.

Last week, Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel issued an advisory opinion saying the state’s colleges and universities aren’t required to verify whether or not the students they admit are in the country legally. Undoubtedly, two questions about this decision have arisen in your mind, and in answer to the first, yes, there are colleges in Arkansas, and some of them are actually very good. Now quit being an elitist Midwesterner and read the rest of the editorial.

Liberalism threatens “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” I am constantly amazed at the willingness of individuals to yield so much power to the hands of so few people. Liberalism asks us to put our trust in the government, big government, and those who represent it. Liberals fail to recognize, however, that one of the main reasons America exists today was to escape the political rule of despotic kings and monarchies whose centralized power – big government – controlled everyone.

Being the starving college student that I am, I was not going to turn down free clothes, so I agreed to go. After two hours of trying on pinstripes and neutral colors, I came away with a not-so-ugly jacket-skirt combo and a newfound understanding of Hillary Clinton.

UN watchdog says Iran blocking arms probe

The Union is quiet on Sunday nights, unless the IU Ballroom Dance Club is out to bring in new members.

In an effort to tempt students, some are throwing in gifts, such as an iPod, T-shirt or other freebies. Jerry James, a senior finance lecturer in the Kelley School of Business, said students need to look beyond the allure of giveaways.

Ice hockey team holds call-out

The 2008-09 IU men’s club ice hockey team will host three call-out meetings in September at the Pan American Plaza Skating Rink in Indianapolis. “The meetings help establish which guys we will place on the ice when we get to games,” said IU coach Tom Orr. Last season proved to be successful for the team, as they made it to the Division II National Championship game before falling to Davenport University.

Emergency Medical Technicians to be housed in McNutt

For the first time, student emergency medical technicians will be stationed at a campus dormitory on weekends so they can quickly respond to emergencies. The IU Emergency Medical Service club will put student EMTs at the McNutt Residence Center from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. The volunteers will act as first responders to treat students who are injured or intoxicated.

Something for every student

Ranging from the tall, muscular senior Owen Dickey to the slim, witty sophomore William Peabody to the everyday senior Brian Pike, club sports at IU host a variety of interests and styles. For these three students, each has found a passion. Dickey participates in rugby, while Peabody is an active participant in rowing and Pike practices hapkido. “(Club sports) are an excellent program,” said Pike, the hapkido club’s president. “It’s a great opportunity for students to try something new and exciting.”
