Team cooks up cohesive recipe

IU women’s golf coach Clint Wallman and a panel of judges were treated to a taste of teamwork Friday night.In its fifth annual “Iron Chef” competition, the team was split into three groups to prepare the golfers’ best pasta dishes.Although each team stood proudly by their meals, Wallman said teamwork was the most important recipe of the night.

College Mentors collecting textbooks for kids

Even though a new semester has begun, many students are still left with the ghost of semesters past in the form of textbooks they cannot sell back. Junior Katie Smith is organizing a textbook drive to help raise money for the group College Mentors for Kids, a nonprofit organization that gives children, typically from grades one through four, the opportunity to experience how higher education can influence their lives.

Ivy Tech opens new life sciences center

Officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday for a new life sciences center, they hope will help train students to meet the thousand-plus life science jobs they expect to be created in the coming years. Ivy Tech-Bloomington and the Monroe County government had a ceremony Friday for the new Indiana Center for Life Sciences, which opened Jan. 12 – just in time for classes.

IU students face drug charges

Two IU students were arrested Friday morning after Bloomington police found marijuana in one’s apartment. Sebastian M. Smigielski, 21, faces preliminary charges of maintaining a common nuisance, dealing marijuana, possession of marijuana and reckless possession of paraphernalia. Mitchell R. Arnold, 20, faces a preliminary charge of visiting a common nuisance.

Miss Indiana Katie Stam was crowned Miss America 2009 in Las Vegas on Saturday night, fighting off a throat infection, laryngitis and 51 other contestants to win the 88-year-old pageant’s title. The 22-year-old University of Indianapolis student became the first Miss America winner from the Hoosier State. She drew loud applause for her rendition of “Via Dolorosa” during the talent portion of the beauty pageant at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.
