Hudson’s Super Bowl anthem showed courage

During the Super Bowl on Sunday, emotions were flying, from anger to excitement. Viewers from the stands and couches were all watching one of the biggest games of the year. There wasn’t just the game, the ads and the halftime show as per usual, but something that everyone should truly appreciate: Grammy-nominated singer Jennifer Hudson’s outstanding performance after a three-month hiatus.

Lack of ‘D’ contributes to IU's 11th loss

As agitated as IU coach Tom Crean and the Hoosier fan base appeared toward the referees, the numbers don’t lie: The Hoosiers’ inability to stop Ohio State’s offense is what doomed them.

Matt Roth doesn’t look the type to bring 17,202 people to their feet. He’s certainly not one you would expect to drop Ohio State coach Thad Matta’s jaw. “I honestly wanted him to keep shooting,” Matta said after Saturday’s game, “because I was like, ‘This is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen.’”

Dreams dashed in a second

A Super Bowl, it seemed, was ready to head home to Glendale, Ariz., on the back of a redemptive quarterback and a wide receiver with impossible talent. Then a second ticked away.

The Hoosier Relay team passes the baton Saturday afternoon at the Gladstein Fieldhouse. IU won thirteen events during the Indiana Relays held on Friday and Saturday.

Hoosiers drop 11th straight in front of raucous crowd

The Hoosiers (5-15, 0-8) reluctantly made history Saturday with their 11th consecutive loss, tying a 66-year-old school record. Ohio State outscored IU by 14 points after halftime and outlasted an unconscious shooting performance by freshman guard Matt Roth to beat IU 93-81.

Chinese New Year focuses on family

The Chinese New Year Celebration, sponsored by the Chinese Student and Scholar Association, was held Saturday at the IU Auditorium. It included food from Chow Bar along with two and a half hours of performances to celebrate the start of the Year of the Ox and a look back at last year’s events.

Festival celebrates GLBT community

RPS to look for new RAs

The new batch of potential RAs underwent an interview process with a professional and graduate student staff member. RAs go through a lengthy process to get the position. Students apply online and provide a resume and recommendation letters. Staff members then check each student’s application, bursar and judicial standings and GPA.

Man says fraternity forced him to drink alcohol

The IU Police Department is investigating an assault case involving a fraternity. At 1:51 a.m. Friday an IUPD officer noticed a male subject who appeared to be intoxicated and had injuries on his face and neck, Minger said. His right eye and upper lip were swollen, and he had cuts on his face and several cuts on his neck. He told the officer he had been at a fraternity but had not been drinking. He said the house members forced him to drink by saying if he didn’t, he would be beaten, Minger said.

Former IU student arrested for assault in dorm room

IU Police Department arrested a 22-year-old former IU student Friday morning for allegedly assaulting his 18-year-old ex-girlfriend. Matthew Stein faces preliminary charges of criminal confinement, a felony, and battering with injury, a misdemeanor.

Black History Month connects community

Marcellus Neal led the way in 1895 for black students at IU as the first black graduate of the University, and Frances Elizabeth Marshall followed in Neal’s footsteps to become IU’s first female black graduate in 1919. These alumni, the namesakes of the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center, are a small part of IU’s black history. Neal and Marshall’s legacies inspired the 2009’s Black History Month celebration: “Quest of Black Citizenship in the Americas.”
