Safety, for a price?

In the past week, Americans have demonstrated their gift for translating natural human empathy for the victims of Hurricane Katrina to donations of money and elbow grease -- the thousands of volunteers working to assist Katrina victims hail from dozens of religious groups, philanthropic organizations and conscientious businesses. But Hurricane Katrina has exposed debilitating weaknesses in more than just the levees of New Orleans.

New local exhibits showing at Waldron

Now that a new school year has begun, students both new and old want to know, "What is there to do around here?" Bloomington is filled with things to do and see. From places to eat and shop to musical performances around town to art galleries, Bloomington has it all. One such interesting place is the John Waldron Arts Center, 122 S. Walnut St. The center offers not only art exhibits, but also art classes, plays and musical performances. The arts center features two galleries for artists to display their work and many classrooms to educate people of all age groups about art.

High hopes for Herbert's junior year

Bush readying $40 billion relief request

WASHINGTON -- President Bush intends to seek as much as $40 billion to cover the next phase of relief and recovery operations from Hurricane Katrina, congressional officials said Tuesday as leading lawmakers and the White House pledged to investigate an initial federal response widely condemned as woefully inadequate.

Student groups organize variety of relief programs

IU students, faculty and organizations met last night in an attempt to pool their resources and share fund-raising strategies for Hurricane Katrina relief. The IU Student Association, in an effort to prevent an overlap in charitable goals, organized the meeting, which spawned a number of ideas, including selling Mardi Gras beads, putting on benefit concerts and collecting money on campus.

Herbert discusses progress in 3rd year

Raising Relief

IU President Adam Herbert and Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan turned out with about 125 people Monday for a benefit to raise money and supplies for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The goal of the event, held outside the Monroe County Courthouse, was to bring together the Bloomington community, providing them with the inspiration and the vehicle to donate supplies and money to the victims of Katrina.

Readership program relaunches

Seventy-seven copies of The New York Times remained in Woodburn Hall's lobby depository at 3:45 p.m. Monday. Well past the point of breaking news, these papers, still crisply folded, linger as sure fodder for the recycling bin or garbage can. Like these leftover issues, and the 62 remaining copies of USA Today beside them, the fate of the Student Newspaper Readership Program waits patiently for the response of the IU community: Will it be realized or will it be canned?

Agassi hangs tough in 5-setter to meet Blake in quarterfinals

NEW YORK -- Three points from the end of a sunbaked five-setter, the man draped over the net like a wet noodle was 10 years younger than Andre Agassi. Maybe to rub it in, maybe because Agassi felt rejuvenated, he hopped on his toes as Xavier Malisse, gasping and all but gone, peeled himself off the net and returned for the final moments of punishment.

Jerry Rice retires from football after 20 seasons

DENVER -- Unwilling to be a bit player with the Broncos, Jerry Rice retired Monday, closing a 20-year career for the most productive receiver in NFL history. Rice, 42, made his decision during the weekend at home in San Francisco, then returned to Broncos headquarters and met with coach Mike Shanahan.

IU's Indianapolis connection

They've played soccer together on the same team since sixth grade and have already made history in the first match of the 2005 IU men's soccer season. Friday, the sophomore trio of goalkeeper Chris Munroe, and defenders Greg Stevning and Charley Traylor became the first group of teammates from the same high school graduating class to start and play in a match for the IU men's soccer team. Stevning and Traylor went to middle school together and still live together off-campus, with Munroe living just down the street. When the trio were seniors at North Central High School in Indianapolis, they won the 2002 Indiana High School State Soccer Championship. As the group stepped onto the field against Wake Forest University, their three-year journey from the high school's varsity squad to the Indiana Olympic Development Program and through the Dynamo Futbol Club team finally culminated.

IU physics professor receives Humboldt Award

Counseling and Psychological Services at the IU Health Center offers these tips for reducing stress levels: Take care of yourself. Coping with Katrina: human response to tragedy

Three centuries of New Orleans history once included Mardi Gras merrymaking, the birth of jazz music and expressions of voodoo before Hurricane Katrina landed ashore a week ago. Stupidity: Part 2

Rubble in the streets, corpses casually strewn about, armed looters taking whatever they need or want. That was Baghdad in 2003. Just add water, and you have New Orleans today. The devastation in New Orleans following the breaking of the levees had a horrible human cost. The death toll has not been tallied, but it is certainly in the thousands. Hundreds of thousands more are marked by injury, mental anguish, fear and loss. They are American refugees, fleeing an American disaster and now living in American refugee camps.
