Japan’s incoming prime minister, Yukio Hatoyama, reassured U.S. leaders Thursday that their security alliance remains the foundation of its foreign policy, despite pre-election promises that Tokyo would seek a more independent path.

Security crackdown imposed at Afgahn embassy

The U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan has banned alcohol and assigned American personnel to watch the embassy’s security guards following allegations of lewd behavior and sexual misconduct at their living quarters.

Former Cinemat reopens as live music bar The Bishop

The empty space the Cinemat left behind at its closing has now been put to use. The Bishop is a new bar in Bloomington and will have a grand opening Friday and Saturday. It will serve patrons both beer and live music. The opening on Friday is at 11 p.m. and is open to those 21 and over. Saturday’s opening at 10:30 p.m. is open to those 18 and older.

Downtown inspires student artists

Growing up in a small college town in Illinois, graduate student Kristin Carlson lacked a lively downtown similar to Bloomington, and after returning from a summer abroad in Venice, she was inspired by the “city of many squares.” This inspiration became a collaborative art display titled Interpreting the Square: Thirty Artists Explore Downtown Bloomington. The display opens with a reception 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Bloomington City Hall Atrium.
