If you thought the men’s basketball season didn’t officially get underway until Midnight Madness, Hoosier Hysteria or whatever they call that night in mid-October, you would normally be right. But not this year. This year, IU is getting a head start on the season.

NCAA policies promote professional market

The term “free agent” is one that marks an athlete who can choose to play for the bidder of their choice and is generally used in association with professional athletics in the United States and throughout the world. Like so many other entities in a market-based economy, a free agent market’s primary aspect is money. But without money – that is, actual currency – can a free agent market still exist? And, if so, has the association employing that unnatural economy traversed from the realm of amateur and become professional?

The Big Ten Network strikes deal in 2 markets

The Big Ten Network reached a deal Wednesday with Insight Communications to carry the channel on its Classic service in two markets. Insight will carry the network in Evansville, Ind., and Columbus, Ohio, and that service will stretch into parts of northern Kentucky, according to a press release. The network will also be launched on Insight’s Digital 2.0 service throughout Kentucky and will be aired during a two-week promotional period on Insight’s Classic service.

Campus cable to provide The Big Ten Network for residents

Students living in dorms have an extra reason to bleed cream and crimson this year. However, unlike their on-campus counterparts, many of those residing off campus may miss out on a number of IU games available to them on TV. The Big Ten Network, which is set to launch today, will carry a minimum of three IU football games, at least six conference IU men’s basketball games and likely more Hoosier athletic events which will be announced later, according to the Big Ten Network’s Web site. This weekend, BTN will broadcast Saturday’s home football game against Indiana State as well as Sunday’s men’s soccer match between IU and UCLA.

MCPL director resigns, senior health benefit program reinstated

After months of controversy, Monroe County Public Library Director Cindy Gray has resigned, effective Aug. 31. Stephen Moberly, president of the board of trustees, made the announcement at a board meeting and public hearing on the 2008 budget. At the same time, he also announced a plan to reinstate the over-60 benefits program the board had decided to cut in August 2006.

IU prepares for trip to Bahamas

The IU men’s basketball team will kick off the 2007-2008 season this weekend by playing four exhibition games in the Bahamas. While many students would jump at the opportunity to jet to the Bahamas after the first week of classes, coach Kelvin Sampson said for the team, this trip is anything but a vacation.

Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning added a new pitch to his plethora of commercials Wednesday – one that came from the heart. Manning gave an impromptu endorsement for New Orleans’ tourism industry for the second anniversary of Hurrican Katrina. He encouraged those who have not visited

Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello to play Assembly Hall

Union Board and IU Auditorium have announced that Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello will play Assembly Hall at 7 p.m. Oct. 19. Tickets for show will go on sale at 10 a.m. Sept. 7 and can be purchased at the IU Auditorium and all Ticketmaster locations, or online at ticketmaster.com. Ticket prices are $30, $45, and $55.

Two single-file lines engulfed the entrance to the Student Recreational Sports Center Tuesday, while a constant stream of people exiting the gym created a scene reminiscent of a crowded city subway.

Time zone complaints forged in Jasper County

JASPER, Ind. – Comments submitted to the federal agency considering whether to move six southwestern Indiana counties back to the Eastern Time Zone include two letters against the move listing hundreds of apparently forged names. The letters to the U.S. Department of Transportation, purporting to be from residents of the town of Ireland and parishioners of St. Raphael Catholic Church in Dubois, have typewritten names but no signatures.

Ethiopian food returns to Bloomington restaurant

Ethiopian food will be making a comeback to the Bloomington dining scene this fall. Half of Italian restaurant Puccini’s La Dolce Vita, located at 420 E. Fourth St, will be converted into an Ethiopian restaurant. Robert Johnson, a Puccini’s manager, said the Ethiopian portion will open sometime toward the end of September.
