The Hoosiers’ Big Ten season opens Saturday when Penn State, coached by Joe Paterno in his 45th season, comes to Memorial Stadium. The Nittany Lions are 3-1 on the year, and their only loss is against the No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide.

Name revealed in Read Center death

Matthew Erickson, an 18-year-old freshman from Valparaiso, died in his room in Read Center on Wednesday night, according to a release from Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson and Dean of Students Harold “Pete” Goldsmith.

Big Ten keeps to its roots in face of changes

The Big Ten is the oldest Division I college athletic conference. Only two universities, Penn State and University of Nebraska, have been added to the conference in the last 57 years, and nine of the Big Ten’s 12 schools joined the conference before World War I. But in the last four years, the Big Ten made two major changes to keep up with the times.

It has been 20 years since its last Big Ten title and 69 years since its last national championship, but don’t let the large numbers fool you. IU’s cross country team is steeped in tradition, dating back to the early 20th century.
