Matthew Erickson, an 18-year-old freshman from Valparaiso, died in his room in Read Center on Wednesday night, according to a release from Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson and Dean of Students Harold “Pete” Goldsmith.
“Our deepest sympathy goes out to Matthew’s family and friends,” the release said. “The death of a student is a tragic occurrence that diminishes the entire university community.”
According to Associate Vice President of University Communications Mark Land, an autopsy took place Thursday afternoon. However, the results have not yet been released.
“The entire university family mourns the untimely, tragic loss of this young member of the IU community,” the release said. “We extend to Matthew’s family and friends our heartfelt condolences.”
Counseling resources have been made available to Read residents. Students may also consult with counselors from Counseling and Psychological Services by calling 812-855-5711.
