Hoosiers victorious in opener

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- George Leach didn't want to sit the bench. He didn't want to wear the white practice jersey that denotes the second team. After Sunday's eight-point, seven-rebound, four-block performance in IU's 65-61 season-opening victory at Charlotte, Leach decreased the chance either will happen again. "I called my mom (before the game), and she said 'You know you can play basketball, so calm down,'" said Leach, who graduated from Charlotte's Olympic High School. "I just did what I thought I could do. I figured while I was in there, I might as well try something."

Reality shows a cheap way to entertain

The men's tennis team defeated Iowa Saturday to pick up its first conference victory of the season and their first overall win in the last four matches. "We needed this match," coach Ken Hydinger said. "We came in 0-2 in the conference and now are 1-2, so we have a chance to earn our way out of a hole." But climbing from the hole did not come easily for the Hoosiers.

It was with great interest that I read Gov. Frank O'Bannon's speech concerning the fiscal situation of Indiana Thursday. What he outlined in that speech will have a profound impact on the students of IU. O'Bannon, while having the best of intentions, is mistaken in freezing spending on universities. I believe it is imperative that the student body take a proactive approach and work with the administration to write, call, rally and lobby the state legislature to ensure that university funding is a priority for the state.

Bill targets right objective

State Sen. Michael Young is teaming up with state Representative Mark Kruzan to push a bill through the Indiana General Assembly that would tighten the laws for drinking and driving. This bill is a good idea. With the proposed plan, it would become a Class D felony if you were caught driving under the influence of alcohol with someone under the age of 18 in your car. You would lose your license permanently if convicted of causing a death while over the legal limit or for a third offense. Probationary licenses would not be granted if a driver is convicted of driving under the influence a second time or if the offender is operating the vehicle with a blood-alcohol content of .15 or higher.

The Epic: Taking frat rock beyond cargo pants

Frat Rock? The concept seemed laughable at first, almost oxymoronic. A mental image is conjured of guys in cargo pants trying to perfect Dave Matthew's songs so the girls would dig them at the next formal. The Epic is Bloomington's newest, up and coming frat rock band, stemming out of the greek subculture here on campus. With six members in the band, they represent four of the campus' fraternities, and are enjoying a large fanbase within the greek community. Although the band credits much of their success to their involvement in fraternities, they are looking to broaden their horizons and their audience.

Brehm seeks partnerships

Thirty-three days into her tenure as chancellor has left Sharon Brehm a bit frazzled. She faces page after page of reading, of signing, of names and titles and phone numbers to remember. She attends countless meetings and luncheons and University activities. She's even managed to swing by the MAC for an opera theatre performance. Brehm might be frazzled, but she hasn't lost her focus.

The upbeat atmosphere of the restaurant is an invitation to people of all ages to meet up with friends or catch a game on one of the big screen TVs.

Senior rider repeats runner-up finish in women's competition

But this time, Johnson fell to Gamma Phi Beta senior Deirdre Finzer, an IDS staffer, in Saturday's Miss-N-Out at Bill Armstrong stadium. Alpha Gamma Delta freshman rookie Corey Bitzer was third, followed by Johnson's teammate, senior Sara Coffman, Delta Zeta senior Lisa Braudis and Delta Gamma senior Lauren Naset rounded out the top five.
