Report of freshman with alcohol poisoning leads police to Chi Phi party

A report of a female student taken to Bloomington Hospital for alcohol poisoning prompted police to investigate a party at the Chi Phi fraternity early Friday. Freshman Kylie Mckay was cited at Bloomington Hospital for illegal consumption. Those with her at the hospital reported there was a party at the fraternity where Mckay had consumed 'punch,' said IU Police Department Sgt. Tim Lewis.

Are you the next American Idol?" asks the Fox broadcasting Web site, announcing its upcoming auditions for the show's second season. I think we should take them seriously. After all, who do we look toward today to inspire us but our idols? Music, movies, talk show hosts? Is there anything short of 15 cent drafts that excites us beyond words? But what happened to that great orator or poet who called us to better ourselves from the inside out?

Lugar resists pressure on Iraq

It has often been said that politics makes strange bedfellows. In few states is there a finer example of this statement than in Indiana. It would be expected that President Bush, a Republican, would find some of his staunchest supporters for a war with Iraq from Indiana Republicans (traditionally a very conservative group) and that he would find opposition to war from the state's Democrats.

It was with much anticipation that I set out on my first trip west. I was looking forward to finally doing some camping. But I was to be disappointed and left feeling cheated. First, everything was so damn expensive -- $30 for an adventure pass, $13 for camping, $5 for firewood and $5 per day for parking anywhere other than campgrounds. If I had wanted to take a shower, it was an additional $1.25. That was in Angeles National Forest in California.

Hoosiers ready to face Ohio State after Louisville loss

Close, so close. The IU field hockey team (2-8) will use those words for motivation as they prepare to face No. 20 Ohio State Saturday following their heartbreaking, 2-1 double overtime loss to No. 9 Louisville Wednesday. Although the loss to the Cardinals was discouraging, coach Amy Robertson said there were many positives she hopes will carry over to Saturday's contest with the Buckeyes.

Team steps up to tee against Big Ten teams

The youth movement, which has swept across American athletics, has now added the Hoosiers men's golf team to its list of victims. When the Hoosiers tee off today in Ann Arbor, Mich. at the Wolverine Invitational at the University of Michigan Golf Course, they will be starting two freshmen, two sophomores and one senior. The lineup is a dramatic difference from their first tournament, which included two sophomores and three seniors.

Team looks to get back on track after loss

After receiving votes in the top 25 of the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Poll, the women's volleyball team will travel to Michigan this weekend to battle the Wolverines Friday night and the No. 21 ranked Michigan State Spartans Saturday. IU (11-3, 1-1) has won six of seven games, but are coming off a loss to the No. 9 Penn State Nittany Lions last weekend. The Hoosiers look to build upon a 1-2 road record this season, but said they know things will not come easy against the fast-paced Wolverines.

IU hosts Hoosier Classic

The women's tennis team will play its only home tournament this season at the Hoosier Classic Invitational at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts this weekend. The invite, which starts 10 a.m. today and ends Sunday, includes two other teams from the Big Ten (Iowa and Ohio State), and three teams from the Big 12 (Kansas, Kansas State and Missouri).

Clemson invite kicks off season

After deciding not to attend the Ball State Invitational last weekend, the men's tennis team will kick off its season today with the Clemson Invitational in Clemson, S.C. The competition continues through Saturday and Sunday. Having not played a match yet this year, the Hoosiers are looking to see how they stack up against other competition. Coach Ken Hydinger said he's excited for the opportunity to start playing competitively in the tournament.

Undefeated Hoosiers to compete at ISU invite

Saturday, the IU men's cross country team travels to Terre Haute to compete in the Indiana State Invitational. The team will face its most difficult opposition of the season against a field of six ranked teams. This will be the second consecutive year the team has raced in the meet. They will race on the course several times later this season, including on Nov. 25 at the NCAA Championship. Members of the team said the meet will provide positive experience for Nationals and other meets at the course.

Hoosiers face off against DePaul, Northwestern this weekend

The IU women's soccer team will take a break from its Big Ten schedule tonight by hosting DePaul before returning to conference play Saturday to battle Northwestern. These two games will start the second half of the Hoosiers' schedule, and will have ramifications for an NCAA tournament bid. DePaul will be playing the Hoosiers for the first time, and are the last non-conference opponent IU will face until Oct. 27. IU comes into the weekend with a 5-3-1 (2-1-1) record while the Blue Demons enter the weekend with a 6-3-0 record (2-2-0). The Hoosiers know that although they are not playing a Big Ten foe, it is still an extremely important game.

Lemonhead Regatta kicks off fall rowing season

When the Hoosiers host the fifth annual Lemonhead Regatta this weekend, the squad will be expecting big things. Coach Mark Wilson said he is confident his team will do well Saturday, as they have been practicing rigorously every day at 6 a.m. Wilson said they are focused on finishing first in several of the races.

Saturday, Memorial Stadium will sit in silence. And it won't bother the Hoosiers one bit. Saturday represents IU's only bye of the season, giving the team a week off as they prepare to take on the No. 19 Wisconsin Badgers next week. "Off-weeks have become such a common thing in college football that everyone has them," said coach Gerry DiNardo, contrasting his playing days at Notre Dame with the present.

Defense comes up big again in fifth road win

INDIANAPOLIS -- Thursday night's game between No. 4 IU and Butler was the epitome of an in-state grudge match. Records did not mean anything going into this game, and it was clear from the beginning that the Bulldogs did not care that the Hoosiers are one of the nation's best. IU (7-1-2) survived Butler's (3-5-1) physical play winning 2-0 in the final match of a five-game road trip. "It was one of our best performances," coach Jerry Yeagley said. "The first half was almost clinical. The score did not indicate the quality of play we had offensively."

No. 27 Hoosiers travel to Notre Dame for invite

For the last month there have been strong expectations from the women's cross country team. Apparently, the voters for the FinishLynx NCAA Women's Cross Country Poll are starting to listen. Earlier this week, the Hoosiers were ranked for the first time since 1990, as they moved to No. 27 in the nation after a strong showing and a fifth-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational last week.

Hoosiers shut out Bulldogs

INDIANAPOLIS --Throughout Indiana's storied 30-year soccer history, the Hoosiers have put up some impressive records, including a 46-game unbeaten streak in 1983 and 1984 and a reigning streak of five consecutive College Cup appearances. Thursday night's 2-0 victory over Butler gave this year's Hoosier squad a tie of a school record with the 1981 team.

Five shot to death in 16-hour suburban chaos

SILVER SPRING, Md. -- Five people were slain within a few miles, gunned down one by one over 16 hours in public places in Washington's suburbs, authorities said Thursday. They said there was a "strong possibility" the killings were related. One of the victims was shot to death while riding a lawnmower, another while cleaning her car at a gas station.

Air strikes shake allies

WASHINGTON -- Allied forces dropped thousands of leaflets over southern Iraq Thursday, warning Saddam Hussein's troops against firing on British and U.S. planes that have been patrolling the no-fly zone. Iraqi forces fired on aircraft delivering the leaflets and allied forces bombed an air defense operations center in response, said officials at the U.S. Central Command.
