South Bend woman adopts a platoon of soldiers

SOUTH BEND -- When Pam Brunette was looking for ways to help America after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, she happened across the AdoptaPlatoon Web site devoted to providing support for troops overseas. Few have probably taken its message to heart as deeply as the South Bend woman. Not only did she sign up to be a surrogate "mom" for several individual military members, she went on to adopt several platoons and, recently, an entire Marine company.

NEW YORK -- A New York lawyer who claims she had the original idea for the box-office hit "Bringing Down the House" filed a $15 million copyright lawsuit Friday against star Queen Latifah and the movie's other producers.

'Streetcar' a classic

The stage rocked with raw emotion Friday night at the premiere of the IU Department of Theatre and Drama's production of "A Streetcar Named Desire." The play, directed by Bruce Burgan, ran more than three hours in length and was welcomed by a packed house.

Tougher EPA rules could stun 30-plus counties

INDIANAPOLIS -- Strict new federal air quality standards that go into effect next year could leave industries in more than 30 Indiana counties facing tightened development restrictions. My goodness, America is anal! In today's society, we can barely think about "offensive" material, let alone enjoy it. It's true that some things we do or say cause more harm than good, however, the politically-correct state that we live in is borderline painful. Objectifying the sexes is my favorite offense. These days, you can barely turn around without someone being exploited for his or her body. The message is clear, being a sex object is "bad."
