Can we focus, please?

During this year's campaign for the big chair in the Oval Office, there are many issues that are sure to have a strong impact on who we elect. I am sure most people have an opinion as to which topic they feel should and will be the deciding factor in who becomes president. But guess what -- it really doesn't matter which topic we, as the American people, want to address, because the media and the two campaign leaders have already made that decision. This election will be about a war.

Nearly 60 killed fighting in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Insurgents hammered central Baghdad Sunday with one of their most intense mortar and rocket barrages ever in the heart of the capital, heralding a day of violence which killed nearly 60 people nationwide as security appeared to spiral out of control.

Can we ever be objective?

As a journalist, allow me to say with total objectivity that journalists are some of the least objective people you'll ever meet. After all, we have to be, don't we? Journalism -- the best journalism, the ground-breaking Woodward and Bernstein bringing-down-the-White House kind of journalism -- is pro-active, not complicit. It is competitive. It requires an infinite number of decisions and judgment calls. No prisoners are taken.

Fish -- the other recreational drug

I spent my weekend just like every average college student, trying to figure out if seafood really is the answer to achieving world peace. It all started with something my mom told me. She likes to give me highly interesting media factoids, keeping me updated on important headline news such as a cow having triplets or random scientific "breakthroughs." If you're like me, while you respect science and innovation, you see some scientific studies to be about as necessary as a Spice Girls reunion tour.

A stadium on the plate

OK, forget about the Colts' Thursday loss to New England. They may not go to the Super Bowl, but regardless, the Indianapolis Colts are a part of central Indiana and one that our state needs to support. Despite the fact Indianapolis football fans are often called "fair weather," you should see how hurt the city is every time they are just-so-close, but not close enough. We need to support the Colts with a new stadium, but the state feels it can't afford the cash.

IU stuns No. 24 Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. - Matt LoVechhio threw for a touchdown and Benjarvus Green-Ellis ran for 91 yards and another score, to lead Indiana to a 30-24 upset of No. 24 Oregon 30-24 on Saturday and its first 2-0 start since 1996. The Hoosiers, who won only two games all of last season, opened with a 41-10 rout of Central Michigan.

IUSA president outlines goals, plans for upcoming school year

The IU board of trustees conducted its first business meeting of the 2004-2005 school year Thursday afternoon in the Indiana Memorial Union. Several motions were passed before the full board, although most issues were discussed and resolved during a preceding two-day retreat in Nashville, Ind.

New player cited for alcohol

Lucas Steijn, the newest addition to the IU basketball team, was cited for illegal consumption Sunday night on Indiana Avenue. Steijn, who was introduced Tuesday as a late addition to the 2004-2005 squad, was one of seven passengers in an SUV that included fellow player Kyle Taber, a walk-on. All seven passengers were cited for illegal consumption and two for seat belt violations.

Graduate students fight for insurance

Ursula McTaggert's employer does not provide her with dental insurance. When she developed an abscessed tooth three years ago, she had to pay for the $1,000 surgery out of her own pocket. With a salary of $12,000 a year, she said there was little money for the operation. "I had to go out and take a loan," she said. "It was pretty dire."

First-week arrests up from 2003

Reading the IU Police Department blotter can be quite a chore for many students, as arrests on alcohol-related charges are steadily rising. According to IUPD statistics, arrests during the first week of school were more than triple what the were last year.

Trustees approve several motions in meeting

After just two weeks of classes, many students are already beginning to feel the frustration of overcrowding at the Main Library Information Commons Loft. On Thursday, The IU board of trustees voted in favor of a proposal to renovate the Information Commons Loft on the second floor of the west tower.

Manhattan Short Film Festival visits Buskirk

The Manhattan Short Film Festival, a competition evaluating quality film submissions, is coming to the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, and viewers will help determine the competition winner.

Budget higher than expected

The chancellor's office issued an incorrect figure for IU's predicted loss of revenue due to lower enrollment than expected. Originally pegged as a $7.3 million shortfall, IU-Bloomington Interim Chancellor Ken Gros Louis said the figure is actually $5.1 million, $2.2 million less than previously reported.

IU to host 3-day national Informatics conference

Prominent national and international scholars, educators and informaticians will come to IU this weekend for "Informatics: Defining the Research Agenda," a three-day conference from Sept. 10 through 12 that will define informatics, discuss its research and theorize where the field is heading in the upcoming decade.
