Foreign relations 101

It looks like the universities in Indiana are getting more and more bland. This year, for the first time ever, IU's foreign student enrollment dropped. Foreign student enrollment at Purdue fell this year for the first time in more than 30 years. At IU, we value diversity, right? We value it because it properly prepares students for the real world, which is diverse. We value it because a healthy community should be diverse. We all agree that a diverse campus is a happy campus.

Indigo Girls to play Buskirk-Chumley

All 600 seats of the Buskirk-Chumley Theater will be full tonight when Amy Ray and Emily Sailers, otherwise known as the Indigo Girls, take the stage. The indie duo will embrace its Bloomington fans with an acoustic show. Over the past two decades, the Indigo Girls have produced eight studio albums and played thousands of shows. The duo has operated within the music industry without the use of marketing gurus or corporate tie-ins.

Oktoberfest, the German way

Beer, bratwurst, candied peanuts and enormous pretzels were staples in my diet last weekend at the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. Imagine thousands of people swarming around rides, food booths and beer tents. My roommate Carla and I journeyed from Dublin to the Bavarian countryside Oct. 1. Carla, being a German and having experienced the joys of Oktoberfest before, showed me quite the time.

Award-winning play opens

Jason Grote thinks technology is turning 2001 into an Orwellian 1984. His latest script, "The New Jersey Book of the Deadk" explores the pervasive nature of technology and how it can be used to infringe on our freedoms as individuals. At least that's the issue he addresses first in his Reva Shiner Playwriting Award-winning play at the Bloomington Playwrights Project.

Hubbard Street Dance Company takes IU stage

Tonight the Hubbard Street Dance Company of Chicago will transform the stage of the IU Auditorium with its diverse contemporary dance styles. The company incorporates varied influences and blends many styles together, including modern dance, theatrical jazz and classical ballet.

Brawl leads to 3 arrests

Bloomington Police officers arrested three students after a fight in a parking lot of the Varsity Villas community early Saturday morning, as about 150 people ran from the scene, according to a BPD report.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author speaks at IMU

Polish Studies Center director honored in Warsaw

From sponsoring conferences with some of the most important Polish figures in politics to holding concerts of traditional Polish music, the IU Polish Studies Center keeps the campus in touch with the colorful Polish culture. Now, the Center is being commended for its efforts in promoting Poland.

Phi Delts' charter suspended

The Alpha chapter of Phi Delta Theta fraternity had its charter suspended by the Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity last week. The general council decided on this action because the chapter violated University and Phi Delts risk management policies relating to hazing and alcohol, according to a Phi Delta Theta statement.

Mount St. Helens releases more steam Monday

MOUNT ST. HELENS, Wash. -- Mount St. Helens vented more steam Monday as new thermal images revealed that parts of the lava dome in its crater are piping hot, a sign that magma continues to rise within the volcano.

Fish lovers beware!

Farm-raised salmon is a growing item in the diet of many Americans. In the past two decades, the production of farmed salmon has increased 40 fold. However, a recent two-year-long study performed by an IU professor and six other scientists has some fish lovers thinking twice before biting into their favorite salmon entrées. The research proved that farm-raised salmon contains significantly high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins and 11 other toxins that could potentially cause cancer.

From karate to birdwatching, professors find many different ways to deal with stress

If you're Professor William Thompson, you need to hit people to let out your frustration while working on your dissertation. Thompson, a political science professor, took up karate and worked his way up to the black belt level. He said karate differs from other martial arts, such as judo and jujitsu.

Sister act

My sister, Brittany, has to buy her size-14 prom shoes at drag queen Web sites. She's a teenage colossus. Standing at 6 feet 1 inch, she has legs like Tina Turner, can bench more than the pretty boys on Jordan Avenue and could kick the hell out of any sore sucker who thought he could steal her purse. Seven years ago Brittany gave tomboy a new meaning. She had a wavy mullet, a silver front tooth and exclusively wore XL Nike shirts and basketball shorts.
