The British are coming! Unfortunately, this phrase is just as true today as it was when it was first coined during the Revolutionary War. This time, instead of sending soldiers, the British are sending letters which may prove to be just as harmful.

What if, one day, every woman in America refused to spend a dime? The economy would combust from lack of shoe, jewelry and low-carb bread purchases, right? Every mall would be a ghost town, and the stock market would crash, sending us all to Hoovervilles. Well, Tuesday was supposed to be that day, but as far as I know, brokers still trade, women still max out their credit cards, and, despite the "recessive" nature of our current economy, I can't say it's significantly wavered in the last 24 hours.

Any newspaper's editorial board must reserve the right to endorse, or not endorse, any candidate. The only tradition we care about is that of the First Amendment, and we respect that the decision of endorsement varies between a newspaper's editors and management, which can alter between election cycles.

Endorsements unnecessary

Editorial boards and newspapers are distinctly separate, but the distinction is lost when a newspaper prints, "The Chicago Tribune urges the re-election of George W. Bush as president of the United States," in its staff editorial.

Gividen talks politics with local Libertarians, supporters

Gubernatorial candidate Kenn Gividen joined a band of 12 Libertarian supporters at the Village Deli, 409 E. Kirkwood Ave., Tuesday night to discuss the "wasted vote syndrome" and to pound out campaign strategies. Nick Blesch, president of IU College Libertarians, was also in attendance.

U2's Bono, Georgia congressman honored for civil rights work

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- U2 lead singer Bono and a civil rights leader from Georgia received awards Monday from the National Civil Rights Museum at the site of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. Bono, a native of Ireland, was honored with the international Freedom Award for promoting greater Western involvement in improving medical care and reducing poverty in Africa.

'Teen Keira' launches new site, lands in Hustler

Born and raised in a small town near Muncie, sophomore September Harness, also known as "Teen Keira," has taken the next step in making it big with her self-made adult Web site. Her original site, www.teenkeira.com which first made the news in April, has acquired more than 700 members and sparked controversy nationwide.

Gender studies plans Ph.D. program

When Suzanna Walters trekked from Georgetown University to Bloomington to chair IU's gender studies department, she came in search of greener pastures. Walters did not come without ambitions. By fall 2006, she hopes IU will have the nation's first doctoral degree program in gender studies.

Professors to address state commission

For every dollar a man earns working in Indiana, the average Hoosier woman earns 68 cents with the same degree of skill, effort, responsibility and working conditions, according to the 2003 American Community Survey conducted by three IU faculty members. This puzzle piece of data will be combined with other significant gender research findings to outline for Indiana legislators a picture of wage equity gaps between men and women, and between minorities and non-minorities, according to a statement.

Iraqi prime minister to extend arms-for-cash program

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi announced plans Monday to extend a cash-for-weapons program for Shiite fighters in Baghdad's Sadr City to cities nationwide in an attempt to disarm the country. In Fallujah, the focal point of the Sunni rebellion, hopes that peace talks could resume there quickly were dashed when the city's chief negotiator, Sheik Khaled al-Jumeili, ruled out restarting talks soon despite his release Monday from U.S. custody.

Coach likes Pacers facing tough opponents in preseason schedule

INDIANAPOLIS -- Minnesota is next up on the Indiana Pacers' preseason schedule that is filled with Western Conference powers, and that's just the way coach Rick Carlisle likes it. The Pacers play Memphis, Denver and Minnesota twice in the exhibition season. All three figure to be in the playoff hunt in the West. That type of competition is good for the team, Carlisle says, because it gives them a chance to hone their offensive and defensive execution against some of the very best.

GLBT office welcomes international students

For several years the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Student Support Services Center has housed specified support groups -- such as those for a particular gender or race -- for students to feel comfortable and make new friends. The latest addition to these groups is a support group for international students which meets privately once a week.

The IU field hockey team is batting .500 in the first four games of its seven-game road trip. The Hoosiers continue traversing the Midwest with hopes of beginning the week with a win against Miami University (Ohio).
