Trustees renew athletic fee, raise tuition

The board of trustees renewed the $30 athletics fee for the 2005-2006 school year Friday against recommendations by IUSA's Committee for Fee Review and a resolution by the Bloomington Faculty Council. The fee, passed with a 6-2 vote, included a last-second compromise suggested by IUSA President Alex Shortle.

Hoosiers finish off Spartans

Senior pitcher Steve Nielsen did not allow his unfamiliar role as starter to hurt his performance on the mound as the IU baseball team closed out their series against Michigan State with an 11-3 victory at Sembower Field. The win gave the Hoosiers their third win of the four game series against the Spartans.

LOS ANGELES - Bobby Shriver, the nephew of President John F. Kennedy and brother of California first lady Maria Shriver, married his fiancee Malissa Feruzzi Saturday in Los Angeles.

Throughout his collegiate career, senior Jeff Overton has been racking up achievements and titles. One big one was missing -- but he got it Sunday as he became the Big Ten Champion in men's golf in Madison, Wis.

'We Did It'

In two separate ceremonies, about 8,000 IU students were officially welcomed into the real world. It came with a one-year free membership in the Alumni Association. IU's 176th graduation commencement ceremony Saturday provided an opportunity for more than 30,000 family members and friends to demonstrate their love and support for graduates. Commencement was divided into two sessions depending on the graduate's particular school of study.

Trustees approve tuition increase, fees

The trustees approved a 4.9 percent increase in combined fees on the Bloomington campus Friday for the 2005-2006 school year. The 4.9 percent included the $30 athletics fee, a $40 increase in the transportation fee and a jump in tuition. Combined fees consist of both tuition and all mandatory fees, such as the student activity, technology, athletic and health center fees.

Hoosiers dominate Spartans in 15-2 win

Having the right balance of pitching and hitting is something the IU baseball team has been searching for all year. Saturday afternoon the Hoosiers had no problem finding it in a 15-2 win over Michigan State.

Finding flaws in something is a lot easier than finding anything to be optimistic about. The play "Flaws" from Bloomington Playwrights Projects almost lives up to its name, but a small-time play shouldn't be discredited because of its scale.

Well, it's all over. I'm a college graduate. Commencement ceremonies have ended, I've received my symbolic red diploma folder, and I've taken the must-have picture in front of the Sample Gates wearing my cap and gown.

I, like many other Lost2005ers, stepped across the threshold of Assembly Hall to find myself captive in a little place known as Never-neverjob. And, while I have some employment prospects, until I get that handshake, I'll remain in the netherworld of "looking good on paper."

Hoosiers look sharp in final Big Ten match

In its final tune-up in preparation for the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, the men's track team looked sharp in the Billy Hayes Invitational Friday night. Highlighting the action were twin All-Americans John and Sean Jefferson in the 1,500 meters. The duo raced in a special section of the 1,500 devoted to fast times. The combination of cool weather and racing underneath the lights brought Jefferson near his personal best.

Hoosiers slam Spartans
